Afaik that only changed relatively recently when the other flags were accepted to the collection. Many of us grew up going to Pride with the rainbow flag as the only 'gay' flag.
I would say that is precisely why it became the general use flag. Easy to recognise and not tied to a specific gender subgroup.
Yeah, I think the earliest instance of the blue toned gay men’s pride flag is like the 2010s? I know I didn’t see it before then, and I mostly associate it with tumblr and twitter.
