I bet it's half a canned pear. They were a popular food at the time. I think

Way too yellow for any pear I've ever seen, and I really like pears. I'm locking in half a peach, probably canned.

Grits also would be weird for someone of his background. They aren't commonly eaten by northerners, especially not someone from bumfuck nowhere ohio in the early/mid 20th century.
