Doing all the side content until i burn myself out at hour 20 trying to be a completionist. Did this with all the witcher 3 question marks in the first areas and was done with the game before i even got to the next section. I now only do side content if its on my way to the main content unless its a game where only the side content is worth doing eg. Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3... A trend hmm
Going for 5 stars on every race in a racing game. I just have to let myself lose or i get stuck on one annoying race i can't 5 star which is why I've never finished burnout revenge.
Modding. I spend hours modding and tired myself out before actually playing. I'm strictly a mod only when something bothers me person now so bug fixes and small qol improvements nothing else.
Forcing myself to play after I've lost interest due to sunk cost. Literally just a waste of time there's no point pushing through boredom there's no reward on the other end.
Touching any modern multiplayer game. If its not coop with friends its a time black hole that nothing of value can come from except losing hours of my life. Multiplayer games are intentionally created to be vapid addictive experiences which I'm just not interested in. I yearn for the days of old battlefield when it gave me an experience that made me actually want to play with people.
Not cheating in a singleplayer game when it gets too tough because i must preserve my pride to my audience of zero people and nobody gives a shit if i cheat. Sometimes games are more fun when you don't have to bash your head against a wall. Halo 2 infinite ammo easy mode in coop to get revenge on those sniper jackals that made me rage on legendary and laso.
Leads onto just play the game on easy. Drop the damn difficulty. If combat sucks in a game why extend it with a harder difficulty? Drop it to easy and just blitz through the story. Its more fun that way.
Sometimes it best not to know anything about a game before playing it. This clashes with the fact games cost money but maybe try it with pirating. Just find a game with cool box art and download it. Knowing too much about a game can ruin it
