Well there's certainly a very valid point being made here, but I'd say when people use that extremely small number it's more to highlight the absurdity of national lawmaking to police 12 children Nationwide. Extreme government overreach. It's more about the absurdity than the Rarity I think.
Just like any form of bigotry, anti-queer bigotry is mostly subtle and unintentional, so even if that's what we think we're trying to say, this should maybe give us pause to reflect on what the subtext of our message really is. It's better to reflect and consider than to immediately get defensive try to rationalize our behavior. This is NOT what an ally does.
