It's not a joke, the frame is plastic and the steel panels are glued on.

[โ€“] Dultas@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Subframe might be plastic but the frame is cast aluminum. Which has its own issues since it's failure modes aren't as forgiving as steel. The glued on part is 100% though.

i love how people debunking claims about cybertrucks is just "no no, it's fucked in a different way"

The cybertruck is a true modern marvel of piece of shit design. It's hard to get all the facts straight considering how fucked it is.

The fact that it's cast aluminum is tremendously funny to me. I love watching videos of these things fall apart trying to tow anything

As I understand it from another thread about this, it's normal to use adhesives on modern cars. Just that Tesla fucked up and uses the wrong adhesive.

Theres no excuse for securing a big flat steel plate to the exterior of a vehicle with glue. Bolt em or weld em.

Wait till you learn that Boeing has used laminated (glued) skins on every 737 since the 80s. Glue can be fine.

[โ€“] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

737 outer panels are bolted to all hell, stfu

[โ€“] flying_mechanic@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

The skin is comprised of a laminated structure, an outer chemically milled skin(to reduce weight) and a "waffle" structure known tear straps. Yes there's rivets, but the structural strength is in that lamination between the waffle doubler.

I love when people who don't know anything about a subject act like they know anything about a subject
