I mean you're right, it's just sad. But at least to me it does not look like they are "busy surviving" at all. It's more as if they've absolutely lost all will to survive. Which of course is also really sad but also quite incomprehensible. At this point, being even unable to walk, they have to know their chances are dire. Yet they just trot along...
