Fediverse vs Disinformation

1717 readers
60 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

Thank you Snopes. I’m so tired of explaining the difference between a picture and a video.

Unfortunately, this whole thing worked exactly as intended. The overwhelming majority of US citizens were discussing if Musk was a Nazi while Trump signed a massive list of executive orders under the cover of media noise.

the fortunate thing is that for a few people it was a wake up call. they focused on the executive orders in ways they wouldn't have before because the action was so shocking and appalling. just… you know. not enough. but it's not nothing

That’s a bright side I hadn’t considered. Thank you for the optimism!

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 6 points 8 months ago

i've seen it in a few people

I don't get what you mean. The executive orders are very much in the news. I've seen it on every major news station. Not like it really matters because trumpers are going to trump and many others don't care either way.

everyone knows this including everyone that tried to pretend like they were doing the exact same thing musk was….
it what i’d call “nerd sniping” form of trolling….
they make endless stupid claims with “sources” and just keep you arguing, spinning your wheels, and wasting your energy trying to “convince” someone that the world’s most obvious nazi salute, post wwii, was a nazi salute.
i guess it’s like sea-lioning….

but here’s my source on that: [insert 45 minute podcast].

dude it’s all in there! what you don’t have enough attention span to watch that? you must not really care that much… 🤣

i also noticed they all switched from 🤡 to 🤣 between trump’s terms…

which makes it feel centrally controlled, you can pretty much filter for those emojis and find 95% chuds / r-bots

Totally. I also remember noticing the emoji shift. I assumed it was cultural, but your central control theory has merit. We’ll be waiting decades for full transparency of this term.
