Removing the domain like this transforms it into a local link which prevents the instance redirection. Doing this will make it easier for newcomers to join your community and participate in discussions!

Why YSK: It’s an incredibly common error and can detract from academic writing as it is factually incorrect punctuation.

Why YSK: Back in 2020 when Australia had our massive wildfires I still had to drive to work everyday in the smoke. I also went and got my car serviced around the same time and they showed me how dark my cars air filters had gotten after just a few weeks of those conditions. The air filters in cars aren't designed to filter out so many particles so as soon as you can you should get them replaced.

Why YSK: People seem to, on average, think that a car takes a lot of fuel to start up. In reality, it takes on the order of a few millilitres of fuel to start an engine. That means if your car isn't equipped with an automatic start/stop system to stop your engine instead of idling, it saves fuel to turn off your engine and start it back up when you need it.

Caveat: air conditioning and radio might not work with the engine turned off.

Scenarios where this might be useful include waiting for trains to pass at rail crossings, waiting for food at drive-throughs, dropping off or picking people up on the side of the road when they need to load stuff, etc. May not be a good idea to use this while waiting at a red light because starting the engine does take time which would annoy drivers behind you when the light turns green.

Some cars are equipped with systems that will automatically stop the engine when you are idling for a while (e.g. waiting for a red light). If yours is, then manually turning off your engine will probably result in reduced fuel savings compared to just relying on the car to do it for you.

I was getting annoyed that the default view is always local posts with Active, and found out that you can change the defaults in the settings! Just don't forget to hit save like I did.

Why YSK: With minimal friction to your purchasing process you can find hidden discounts (sometimes big ones!) for items online or through app purchases.

Especially for larger items you are purchasing online. After going through the entire process of purchasing an item and then stopping just before the "Complete/Place Order" button sometimes will trigger marketing to reach out with bigger discounts.

Why YSK: Federation literally just synched up thanks to the tireless efforts by @ernest@kbin.social over the past few days.

So say I make an account on lemmy.world and post a bunch of stupid comments around other instances then decide to delete my account because I'm ashamed of them. After I delete my account, a copy of all those comments I made on other instances remain on those instances as a "shadow copy." There isn't any way to actually delete them all. The copies of the comments/posts on your home instance will be deleted

tldr: Don't say stupid shit on other instances you'll regret later! They never leave that instance!

Many English speakers apply what is known as a "hyperforeignism" to the Spanish word habanero, using an ñ to mimic other Spanish words like "jalapeño". This is not correct though, as "habanero" is named for the Cuban city Habana (or Havana in English).

YSK long noise videos cant effectively be compressed and as such take quite a lot of storage space and bandwidth. So if you want to keep the hosting costs of social media platforms low, for example when going public, you definetly wouldnt want disenfranchised users to upload them to your platform. 2 different media, I would consider iPhone and iCloud the same. Buying two External Drives of the same type and brand too. Why? Consider losing your Apple account or the drive model fails in a year.

1 off site copy. If all your copies are in your house, a flood, fire, tornado, hurricane, EMP... would lose every thing.

0 time to waste. (My own personal add). Do it now. Procrastination is dangerous and is the biggest regret for when things go sideways.
