An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and I work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Unfortunately the amount of donations has decreased to only 2000€ per month. This leaves only 1000€ per developer, which is not enough to pay my bills. With the current level of donations I will be forced to find another job, and drastically reduce my contributions to Lemmy. If you want more information before donating, consider the comparison with Reddit. It began as startup funded by rich investors. The site is managed by corporate executives who over time have become more and more disconnected from normal users. Their main goal is to make investors happy and to make a profit. This leads to user-hostile decisions like firing the employee responsible for AMAs, blocking third-party apps and more. As Reddit is a single website under a single authority, it means all users need to follow the same rules, including ridiculous ones like censoring the name "Luigi".

Lemmy represents a new type of social media which is the complete opposite of Reddit. It is split across many different websites, each with its own rules, and managed by normal people who actually care about the users. There is no company and no profit motive. Much of the work is carried out by volunteer admins, mods and posters, who contribute out of enthusiasm and not for money. For users this is great as there is no advertising nor tracking, and no chance of takeover by a billionaire. Additionally there are no builtin political or ideological restrictions. You can use the software for any purpose you like, add your own restrictions or scrutinize its inner workings. Lemmy truly belongs to everyone.

Dessalines and I work fulltime on Lemmy to keep up with all the feature requests, bug reports and development work. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. Previously I sometimes had to rely on my personal savings to keep developing Lemmy for you, but that can't go on forever. We partly rely on NLnet for funding, but they only pay for development of new features, and not for mandatory maintenance work. The only available option are user donations. To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached Dessalines and I can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. De R is al weer eventjes in de maand, dat betekent vaak verkoudheden en andere malaise. Nu heerst er in de landen om ons heen al een griepgolf, die ongetwijfeld ons ook gaat treffen. Volgens cijfers van huisartsen, hadden afgelopen week 40 van de 100.000 mensen griepklachten. Als er twee weken achter elkaar 46 van de 100.000 mensen griepklachten hebben, is er sprake van een epidemie.

Videogame Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is vannacht uitgeroepen tot Game of the Year tijdens The Game Awards, de belangrijkste prijzen in de gamesindustrie.

De game won in totaal negen prijzen, een nieuw record. Het werd naast de hoofdprijs bekroond in de categorieën beste verhaal, beste gameregie, beste art direction, beste muziek, beste onafhankelijke game, beste indiegamedebuut, beste acteerprestatie en beste role-playing game (rpg).

D66, VVD en CDA gaan met elkaar verder onderhandelen over een kabinet. Het zou kunnen leiden tot een minderheidskabinet, blijkt uit uitspraken van de leiders van de drie partijen vanmiddag na formatieoverleg.

Hello everyone!

I won't drag the post out too much since most of the info is already in the title, but I would love to hear some suggestions for some children's books to help me develop comfort with, and vocabulary in Dutch.

In terms of my level with the language, I have been doing some Duolingo for over 3 years, but I really started learning and understanding rules and such a couple months ago when I started online lessons.

Edit: A couple people suggested Annie M.G. Schmidt so I looked at the first book in the Jip en Janneke books, but it seems that its too advanced for my level. I'll need to work my way up to that slowly. In the meantime, any suggestions for books aimed more towards 2-3 year olds? I feel like that would be more my current vocabulary level, and I can work my way up from there. Thanks

Het heerlijk avondje is gekomen, de kinderen zitten verwachtingsvol uit te kijken naar de cadeautjes, de surprises met foute gedichtjes zijn allemaal net op tijd afgemaakt.

Ik vind dit volkomen onacceptabel en verwerpelijk. Dit geldt voor iedereen, maar vooral voor iemand die gewoon zijn best doet. Ik hoop dat de politie de bedreigers snel kan opsporen.

De kritiek op Hans Wijers bleek inderdaad voorbarig en onvoldoende onderbouwd. Dit geval toont aan dat de media, voordat zij zware beschuldigingen publiceren, eerst zeker moet zijn van de feiten. Een zorgvuldige, feitengebaseerde aanpak is essentieel voor het vertrouwen in de journalistiek en de kwaliteit van het debat.

De huiskat is waarschijnlijk veel later geïntroduceerd in Nederland dan aanvankelijk was gedacht.
Tot nu toe werd aangenomen dat zo'n 6000 tot 7000 voor het begin van onze jaartelling boeren van het Midden-Oosten naar Europa trokken en dat zij katten meenamen, maar uit genetisch onderzoek blijkt dat "het vroegste genoom van een huiskat die in Europa is gevonden, van rond het begin van de Romeinse keizertijd is", aldus Claudio Ottoni, hoofdonderzoeker van de studie.

Ik vind het een goed plan van Amsterdam om fatbikes te weren uit de drukke gebieden. Het is belangrijk dat de stad leefbaar en veilig blijft voor alle weggebruikers, en deze maatregel lijkt daar een positieve bijdrage aan te leveren. Ook al woon ik niet meer in Amsterdam, ik kan me goed voorstellen dat dit de overlast kan verminderen.

In Nederland wordt de kans op sabotage door bijvoorbeeld Rusland steeds groter. Daarvoor waarschuwen experts en inlichtingendiensten. De spoorsabotage in Polen eerder deze maand laat zien dat Rusland bereid is om steeds verder te gaan met hybride oorlogsvoering.

Pakketjes uit China gaan vanaf 2026 duurder worden door extra douaneheffingen, waardoor TEMU, AliExpress en SHEIN mogelijk minder aantrekkelijk worden om er te bestellen.
