Hi dear Lemmy / Netherlands people! I have a problem. On the 7-th of February, I've sent an email to a Dutch company. I've requested to cancel my paid subscription (dozens of euros per month). They are denying my cancellation saying I haven't gone to their (broken) website, and asking for 2 additional months of payment from me now.

Who is in the right here? Should I deny the incoming payment requests even if they threaten with debt collection services?

The email that I've sent originally was this:

Hey everyone!

The very real, not fish-themed Lemmyvision returns for its third edition! For those not in the loop, read below to learn more about this Lemmy Event:

TL;DR

• From right now and until May 3rd, discuss with your Lemmy instance or community about which song to send to the contest.
• Submit the song in this community by making a new thread.
• On May 4th, voting will begin. You will rank your favourite songs in a form. Any song not submitted by this date will not be featured.
• On May 11th, results of everyone’s favourite songs will be published.
• You can use !lemmyvision@jlai.lu for any question, this will be the community for updates and results, make sure to subscribe if you’d like to stay in the loop.

What is Lemmyvision?

Lemmyvision is inspired from Eureddision (itself a reenactment of the Eurovision song contest) which was held on r/europe some years ago, and based on the participation of national communities / instances and the delicate musical taste of their members (you!).

Every country/community is welcome to participate! The contest follows the rule of “national languages only” but regional languages are welcome as well! Basque, Welsh, Cherokee… you’re welcome to promote a non official language if your community / instance wants to. The aim is to promote different languages and cultures from around the world, to share more between our online communities across Lemmy, and discover songs from lesser known artists.

How it works:

This post, and the !lemmyvision@jlai.lu community will be open until May 3rd, and I will start promoting the event on various instances and communities. Lemmy communities who want to participate have the responsibility to gather its members and vote on a single song to send for the contest.

On May 4th, the songs will be locked in. A playlist will be created to allow you to listen to all of the submitted songs, and everyone will be invited to vote on their favourite. The voting is estimated to last for about a week. On May 11th the results will be published, with a ranking of everyone’s favourite songs!

For the second edition, lemmy.ca was allowed to send three songs, each one in a different language (French Canadian, English, and Inuktitut, in their case). This means your community can send multiple songs if you want to showcase its different languages!

For the first edition, an exception was made for the programming.dev Lemmy community to participate by sending a song related to their main interest (they sent a video game soundtrack). If your instance or community does not represent a specific country or language but wants to participate by sending a song related to your instance center of interest, you’re welcome to do so! For example, lemmy.blahaj.zone could send a song composed by a Queer person!

I don’t expect countries with a “small” population to be accurately represented on Lemmy, so no worries if you don’t have a community and are just a small group of people, or if your country is not even on Lemmy but another platform (Kbin and whatnot), I can make exceptions, just reach out!

Song submission:

• Each Lemmy community is responsible for their own organization.
• Only one (1) song per language per community is to be sent.
• If the song contains vocals then it must be in (one of) the official language(s) of your choice, or a regional language of your choice.
• Songs must have been released after January 1st, 2025.
• Songs must not be international hits[1].
• Submit your songs in their own thread in this community
• Verification will just require a link to the discussion thread created within your community, to ensure it’s a community (not a single person’s) decision.

[1] this is to prevent drama that happened in the past on Reddit, where Germany sent a Rammstein song and obviously won. It’s up to my own appreciation of what international hit means, because it’s hard to measure (metrics on different streaming platforms aren’t the same), but I’m pretty lenient, just ask me if you’re not sure, better to discuss than argue

Voting:

• Voting will be done through a form created on tally.so.
• I will set up the form near the end of the month, and share it in a new announcement post when the time has come.
• If you’re worried about privacy, there will be no questions about personal data, and last year I deleted the form and its results a week after the event was done.

On Federation:

I don’t discriminate based on instances, if your account is not on the same instance as your community, that’s totally fine. Additionally, if you’re on another Fediverse/Activitypub platform and would like to participate, and you’re able to federate with your representing Lemmy community, you’re welcome to join us, I’d just like to keep organization within Lemmy so it’s easier to track participations.

Met de vergoeding van € 150 per maand denkt Takecarebnb 50 extra gastgezinnen per jaar te kunnen vinden. Nu zijn dat er al zo’n 500. Het invoeren van een vrijwilligersvergoeding biedt verschillende voordelen. Bijvoorbeeld het verlagen van financiële drempels voor gastgezinnen, het verminderen van druk op COA-opvang, het geven van een impuls aan particuliere initiatieven en de erkenning van de inzet van gastgezinnen.

Het WK mannenvoetbal komt er weer aan, en dit jaar wordt het gehouden in Canada en Mexico, maar ook in de VS. Dat laatstgenoemde land lijkt af te glijden naar een autocratische staat met fascistische trekjes.
Er is inmiddels een petitie ingediend bij de Tweede Kamer met de vraag om deze WK te boycotten.

TNL vraagt: Wat zijn uw gedachten over dit WK?

Nepcitaten Gebruik van AI-programma’s als ChatGPT als schrijfassistent leidt regelmatig tot missers. Na incidenten in media, wetenschap en advocatuur, ging nu ook journalist Peter Vandermeersch in de fout. „Ik heb de kracht van AI-hallucinaties onderschat.”

Leuk podcastje over het vertrekken bij big tech, waarbij federale alternatieven worden overwogen. Voor techredacteuren toch wat meer non-techy, wat het interessant maakt.

Het is Eid al-Fitr, het einde van de ramadan. Na het ochtendgebed vierden moslims daarom op verschillende plekken in het land het Suikerfeest. Sommigen hadden zelfs frietjes bij het ontbijt.

Why is Sigrid Kaag on the Board of Peace?

The Gaza Executive Board of the Board of Peace has three European members: Sigrid Kaag, Tony Blair and Nickolay Mladenov.

As a former diplomat (career at the United Nations) and politician (deputy prime minister of the Netherlands from 2022-2024 and leader of a centrist liberal party from 2020-2023), Sigrid Kaag's decision has de facto brought a semblance of respectability to this Board that makes it now easier for other European countries to join.

Am I the only one who is perplexed by this decision by Sigrid Kaag?

Op sociale media circuleert een video waarin de actie wordt opgeëist door dezelfde groep die eerder de aanslagen opeiste bij een synagoge in Luik, een joodse school in Amsterdam en een synagoge in Rotterdam, afgelopen weekend. In de video is te zien dat een explosief voor een draaideur wordt aangestoken. De locatie van de beelden is door de NOS geverifieerd.

Na de illegale Amerikaans-Israëlische aanval op Iran keken Europese landen massaal weg. In andere gevallen hameren die landen juist op het belang van ‘territoriale integriteit’ en ‘soevereiniteit’. Een dubbele standaard die het internationaal recht bedreigt.

Tienduizenden inwoners in de IJmond hebben vanochtend uren zonder water gezeten. In de buurt van Wijk aan Zee was een grote transportleiding geknapt. Monteurs hebben een deel van de leiding afgesloten en de watertoevoer omgeleid.

TNL Vraagt: Wat is het ergste dat u heeft meegemaakt?

Wat een onverwacht resultaat nadat Karremans vorig jaar, zonder enig overleg, Nexperia lam legt. Denk je echt dat de Chinesen dit gewoon zouden accepteren? Ze hebben een back-up plan voor een back-up plan. Weer een bedrijf wat Nederland gaat verlaten door het geweldige inzichtsvolle beleid van een Nederlandse regering die een schoothondje van Amerika is.

Zie de titel. Ik zit te denken aan vrijzinnig-socialistische/communistische media. Dat kunnen bijvoorbeeld de Jacobijn en Vrijheid zijn, maar ik vraag me af of er ook meer is, dat Nederlands is en coöperatief georganiseerd.

De trein, een heel fijn en ergens ook wel een romantisch vervoersmiddel om mee te reizen, maar wie nu een treinvakantie boekt voor aankomende zomer is eigenlijk al te laat, want de meeste goedkope tickets zijn al uitverkocht. Het is ook altijd een uitdaging om een treinvakantie binnen Europa te boeken, omdat de verschillende trein-maatschappijen niet echt goed op elkaar aansluiten.
Deze week kwamen veel spoorexperts en spoorbedrijven samen in de Jaarbeurs in Utrecht voor Railtech Europe om de banden nauwer aan te halen en om de nieuwste technieken te bespreken.

TNL vraagt: Met welk vervoersmiddel gaat u het liefst op reis?

Hoe makkelijk politici wegkomen met iets durven te beweren en zodra ze de zin afhebben het tegen overgestelde te declareren, is zo ontzettend frustrerend.

Op links zijn er vooral vragen of het kabinet de aanval van de Verenigde Staten en Israël niet juist veel harder moet veroordelen. "Ik heb veel moeite met het begrip dat de minister uit voor de aanval, terwijl hij ook zegt dat landen zich aan het internationaal recht moeten houden", zegt Volt-leider Laurens Dassen. "Hoe rijmen die twee zich met elkaar?"

Het is natuurlijk oerstom hoe dit zo heeft kunnen gebeuren. Odido heeft abssoluut fouten gemaakt en het is terecht om daar wat van te zeggen, misschien zelfs je contract opzeggen. Laten we echter niet vergeten dat deze hackersgroep uit doorgewinterde professionals bestaat. Het zijn mensen wiens fulltime baan het is om zich voor te doen als een betrouwbaar persoon om jouw sociale verdedigingen te mitigeren en je te overtuigen om een deurtje open te zetten.

Het is een enorm moeilijke taak om je tegen dit soort aanvallen te weren. Het is bijna onvoorkoombaar. Natuurlijk zijn er protocollen en trainingen voor personeel. Daar heeft odido wel steken laten vallen,maar er is maar 1 zwakke schakel nodig in een ketting van duizenden schakels.

Wat odido goed heeft gedaan is niet betalen. Wanneer slachtoffers dit soort criminelen gaan betalen, krijgt het business model van de criminelen legitimiteit. Nu hebben de hackers maandenlang moeite gestopt in Odido en ze hebben er niks voor terug gekregen. Nog een paar keer zo'n tegenvaller en deze hackersgroep kan de koffers pakken.

‘Kon ik die debatten maar skippen.’ In de vroege ochtend van zondag 5 oktober 2025, een kleine week voor de eerste grote verkiezingsdebatten, appt Geert Wilders zijn vertrouweling Gidi Markuszower. Die reageert met een grafiekje waaruit blijkt dat Wilders de lijsttrekker is waarover het meest wordt gesproken. Wilders: ‘Waarom moet ik dan naar die stomme debatten?’ Weer een paar minuten later: ‘Verzin een list.’

Op vrijdagochtend 10 oktober, de dag van het Radio 1-debat met de belangrijkste lijsttrekkers, is die list nog niet verzonnen. Wilders ziet vooral op tegen het eerste tv-debat met vier lijsttrekkers bij RTL, twee dagen later. ‘Ik voel me niet oké, heb er geen zin in’, appt hij Markuszower, opnieuw in de vroege ochtend. ‘Verzin een smoes dat ik niet hoef te gaan.’ Om daaraan toe te voegen: ‘Maar hoe verkoop ik dat nu zonder dat ze me voor lafaard uitmaken?’

Markuszower komt niet veel verder dan het idee om een buitenlandse reis te plannen. ‘Ik zal nog verder denken. Als ik DE smoes heb, laat ik het je weten’, appt hij. ‘Thx, maar moet wel vandaag dan, anders is het te laat’, antwoordt Wilders. Als Markuszower om 13.16 uur nog niets bedacht heeft, schrijft Wilders wanhopig: ‘Please, please, please.’

Als hij het zo vermoeiend vindt, misschien is het een optie voor 'm om de politiek te verlaten. Dan doet hij zichzelf en een groot deel van Nederland een pleziertje. Een bijkomend voordeel is dat hij dan geen smoesjes hoeft te verzinnen om debatten te vermijden.
