Mais si celle-ci rend 75% des sommes détournées, soit 9 milliards de dollars (8,6 milliards d’euros), les juges ont précisé que la peine capitale pourrait être commuée en prison à perpétuité.

La femme d'affaires a dérobé pendant une décennie des milliards de dollars, via un montage d'obligations frauduleuses transitant par la Saïgon Commercial Bank (SCB), détenue à plus de 90% par son groupe, Van Thinh Phat, spécialisé dans l'immobilier. Des dizaines de milliers de personnes qui ont investi leurs économies auprès de la SCB ont perdu leur argent. Les procès contre la dirigeante illustrent aussi bien le laisser-aller du secteur bancaire, durant une période d'enrichissement rapide et inédit du pays, que la campagne anticorruption menée tambours battants par les autorités.
