Not sure about free, but if you can get to Ray County Animal Hospital in Richmond, heard it has decent prices. KU recommends Humane Society of Greater Kansas City or Lawrence Humane Society as lower-cost options, but if you can get to K-State University or University of Missouri, they may have programs as part of their vet schools for lower-cost care. Best of luck for you and the animals!

The Kansas Forest Service (KFS) issued a press release on Wednesday, May 14, calling on the state’s residents to support the agency as it faces dire straits. The source of the KFS’s anxiety comes from the federal Fiscal Year 2026 proposal, which contains a big change that could seriously impact some of its critical services.

The KFS said the Trump Administration’s budget proposal would eliminate all Forest Service State, Private and Tribal Forestry (SPTF) programs. These programs help the KFS with wildfire prevention, support local fire departments, assist private landowners with management of forests or windbreaks, community tree planting and care, along with habitat restoration.

Exactly; the AP should fix their style guide.

Where's the fun in that? This way, we get feel-good news articles to keep the masses compliant and thankful for what little they get back from their government. /hj

I really don't understand why so many states and citizens are opposed to this; simply put, if you want students to do well and thus the country to do well, then the scientific literature recommends that you feed the students. Even the Christian take is in unequivocal agreement:

Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. -- Luke 6:24-26

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’" -- Matthew 25:41-43

Would seem like a no-brainer to me. 🤷

"If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way." - MLK Jr.

Your point around trying to keep the school boards on the right side of things is of paramount importance. Education is of paramount importance right now.

Thank goodness, glad we're on the good list for once!

Absolutely! I get it if you're stocking up for weather disasters to a degree, but the number of folks who rely strictly on bottled water is too high. Seems that some combination of advertising + fear and convenience have made it too enticing to use single-use water bottles, though. ☹️

Agreed! It's absolutely insane what passes the public by these days; unfortunately, I think that the extremely fast residence time for anything in the news cycle is getting worse these days...

Thank goodness for the Lincoln Project! Maybe the bully in chief will eventually come to realize he's not in control here...

A Heritage spokesperson told CyberScoop after publication that the organization was not “hacked.” Instead, the spokesperson said “an organized group stumbled upon a two-year-old archive of The Daily Signal website that was available on a public-facing website owned by a contractor. The information obtained was limited to usernames, names, email addresses, and incomplete password information of both Heritage and non-Heritage contributors, as well as article comments and the IP address of the commentor.”

At least they're admitting to being incompetent...
