It isn‘t a complete reversal per definition, rather than an increase in biodiversity and Plant zones, we cannot completely control whats growing there - some neophytes and exotic species may also grow.

We (Team at a community supported agrigculture) in Zurich rewilded a grassland into a muddy and biodiverse park with different zones. Here a picture in summer.

Here in Switzerland a cooperative came up with the idea to mix individual plots around big shared plots and some mixed recreation areas, that should be managed from all members. It’s logistically more complex, but its as you said, more rewarding in the long term.
