@orbitz Looking for anything that isn't just the top 5 of the year is honestly pretty hard. Here are a few High Grade red releases of varying price and availability from the last couple years:

If you have patience and are willing to pivot, you can do a (good) RG kit as your first. You're more likely to finish a kit you like either way.
@orbitz From what I've heard, the best red RG kits are this and Sazabi, so you can't go wrong with Epyon. Plus, Epyon has wings.
However, if by first try you mean first gunpla I'd honestly recommend something like the HGIBO Grimgerde due to the tiny pieces in the Epyon (and probably the Sazabi), unless you have either a lot of patience or a decent amount of money.
@jodanlime I think the RG Sazabi will be the next kit I hunt down, since I already managed to find a discounted RG Zeong. I hope you have fun with each of those kits!
@jodanlime The RG Wing Gundam (TV) is pretty highly regarded from what I understand, and in addition to this Epyon I've also built the RG Wing Gundam Zero EW and had a lot of fun despite the issues inherent in early Real Grade kits.
@jodanlime No paint except panel lining. For the top coat I used two airbrushed coats of Vallejo Matt Varnish.
@wirelesswire Yeah I lost one of those very small pieces for a few hours. Fantastic kit. I would have been ecstatic to find one for 30% off; it's one of the first kits I put on my "wishlist".
In addition to the very small pieces advice, I would also recommend putting decals and stickers on the wings even if one did not intend to put them anywhere else. They can look kinda boring without the color variation.
@TallonMetroid I've only built a few 30MM kits at this point, so I don't know. This one does have handles underneath to use it as a transport vehicle, though, which is neat.
@wirelesswire Definitely worth it. That shoulder cannon is awesome. The goalie helmet style head was a bit of a surprise, but with the decals on the shoulders and chest it doesn't stick out as much.
