Right! I knew I was forgetting something important! Sodium batteries have some potential to help, including as LiPo/Sodium hybrids.

Evs are awesome and way better than gas cars in 99% of cases. Then a greener grid will makes evs even better over time...

But...

It would take more lithium than is known to exist in all of our current mines to make the batteries for the cars in JUST north america (reference needed, sorry can't remember where I heard this).

Maybe if we had multiple technologies, started getting lithium from the ocean (expensive and may have bad side effects), and used hydrogen for all forms of transportation that it could be used for, because with cars it's pretty unrealistic, but with planes, trains, and trucks its more realistic, AND we kept our range expectations low, and and and... then maybe we could get solid EV penetraion worldwide.

But nah, the real answer is we need to rebuild our cities to have good public transit, put more batteries in bikes and scooters so less overall batteties are needed to move a person (including no batteries for bikes and scooters sometimes too haha), and all that energy can go toward running high speed rail and city streetcars (streetcars on steel rails, because its more efficient and lasts longer and is cheaper to maintain than roads).

Sorry, long answer haha. Btw i was into evs before tesla made it cool, so i've just been thinking about this for a long time haha.

I am disappointed that China is still behind in this regard. I don't think anybody gets punished for it or anything. I think it's just a cultural thing. But still.

Okay, I can get behind this idea if it means building the things in space because we actually have the ability to extract resources from asteroids or something. The science side of me is hella tickled by that.

I mean, logically, we probably have everything on our planet to sustain ourselves. We would never actually need to do that. But still, tickled by that idea.

(Edit. To clarify, I actually liked the article for the most part. I just found some problems with his philosophy lower in the article.)

Okay, the guy goes pretty much full revisionist by the end of that article, but I think most of what he said is sound in terms of facts. His philosophy and political ideology is not exactly correct, though.

He tries to compare communism to fascism and says that communism failed because it ignored merchants. It all sounds like someone who read a couple of paragraphs of a description of what communism was by a western source, but never looked into it further (He has actually read a little more than that. He at least mentions Deng and quotes him as well. His arguments just smell revisionist.). I bet this person just believes that communism is authoritarian but without CEOs.

Can we all get on the same page that this is pretty dumb no matter who pitches it? I don't need the equivalent of ICBMs but for a book or whatever.

I always got to keep in mind that China has four and a quarter times as many people as the US. This still blows them out of the water. It ain't even fucking close.

I'm not near my sources right now, But I also try to keep in mind that China consistently beats its deadlines and the United States consistently misses them when it comes to, well, anything really, but specifically climate change for sure.

China is using so much energy and still growing, that they're not gonna be carbon neutral for a while still, but at this rate they're gonna blow the pants off of the United States. I bet these numbers are in the report, but unfortunately I don't have time to skim 168 pages.

Thanks for the reference Comrade!

MMN is a fav of mine! Yeah, I'm not sure they're ready for that. But if they only see it once a week it might not be overwhelming haha.

I was talking with them one time and I said, do you really read about imperialism at all? And they said, nope, just in talking with you.

That was one point recently where I said, you know what, I'm not going to be able to teach them everything. They're going to have to learn this on their own too.

Thanks comrade!

This is exactly how I feel most people are criticizing the media. I've been dumping liberal news sources left and right over the last year, and one of them I dumped explicitly because they said, hey, you need to become more informed about media, and the first step is trusting good sources, and this list is the best source. And of course, it was all entirely imperial core stuff.

[–] RedClouds@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 year ago

I feel like I used to be able to do that better as a liberal ha ha. I think planting the seeds of communism just takes a lot longer, so I need to be patient.
