really nice remix that combines a wonderful chapter 4 track (from now on) with a wonderful chapter 1 track (field of hopes and dreams)! actually works incredibly well. cute art too

happy halloween! isn't it nice that deltarune has a mascot for its 7th anniversary? i'm going to do a kris deltarune and eat an entire (pumpkin) pie

hey jackenstein, what's the next digit of pi after 3.14159?

love how the beat doesn't reset after an odd measure, so the 11/8 measures alternate between an on-beat and off-beat feel. makes the 23/8 section especially interesting to listen to, though as someone who's used to feeling that section in all sorts of ways, i still found it relatively easy to follow.

my first time watching, i thought it was asriel and chara singing! honestly i think that interpretation still works pretty well

the other two covers were cool too! drama josh's rhyming was pretty insane. and that melancholy singing in NyxTheShield's thing is totally chara, isn't it

...or maybe i'm just putting chara into things too much. sweet little chocolat as the tony himself said in the livestream

i've never actually played undertale! but i've been in the fandom for a very long time -- watching let's plays, seeing cool fan content, lurking in various discussion spaces. and of course, playing through deltarune (and undertale yellow). it's probably the most impactful game of my life, and i bet that's even more true for many others in this community.

the newsletter itself has some interesting stuff. in particular toby wearing an asgore shirt in a picture related to chapter 5, and a mike scene with some implications for theory crafting, maybe.

there's probably a lot of cool stuff that people have made for the 10th anniversary. unfortunately i didn't have the skills and time to make anything myself (other than this lemmy post). i've already read through three 10th anniversary fanfics on ao3, all of which were pretty nice. two other fics that i've been following have also been updated, so i'm excited to read those as well.

hoping to see others share their undertale stories as well! or post some cool fan creations, whether from yourself or from someone else! i'll start with 10 years of Frisk by Kittany_the_Fox.

Despite everything, it's still you.
happy birthday!!!

there's a 10th anniversary stream on september 20 and 21, playing through undertale! also some updates on deltarune.

lovely little thing based on ralsei's characterization in the new chapters. great use of character portraits to convey his feelings.

i can't believe the writer managed to recontextualize ralsei's "If there's no BLOCKs to push... then... Push... me." dialogue from the silly chapter 3 pushing buddies scene into something a lot less silly

it just completed a few hours ago! haven't watched it yet but i'm super excited to do so when i have the time.

skipping ahead in the video, we gotchapters 3 and 4 shown off at games done quick, right after release!

(you could also tell by the initial estimate vs the time in the title that the incentive would be hit)

(You took a piece of candy.)

jackenstein mr. very nice guy pumpkin: YOUR TAKING

nice pumpkin: YOUR TAKING TOO

(You take another piece. You feel like the scum of the earth...)

nice pumpkin, frowning: YOUR TAKING MUCH

(You took too much too fast. The candy spills onto the floor.)

jackenstein regular pumpkin, in shaking text: YOUR TAKING TOO MUCH

it's been TOO LONG since deltarune chapter 4's release for there to be no jackenstein memes in this community

he never says the word "much" in his fight but i feel that "YOUR TAKING TOO MUCH" is still a pretty natural alteration of "YOUR TAKING TOO LONG"

found this cute musical thing some time ago, it's pretty nice! makes gingerbread house feel a lot more lively

nice time signature too! actually is it the first instance of 7/4 (or 7/8 depending on how you interpret it) in undertale/deltarune? can't think of anything else off the top of my head, all other weird time signatures i can think of are either 5/4 due to alphys or the second/third sanctuaries

raise up your bat is naturally the highlight of the chapter 3 soundtrack for me. the melody is great, both sets of lyrics are great, the lost girl leitmotif is incorporated beautifully as the chorus of the entire thing, oh and for some reason there's quite a few parts that sound like megalovania and justice from undertale yellow. one of the rare lyrical pieces in deltarune so far, and toby knocked it out of the park (though was anyone expecting otherwise?)

chapter 4 has an even stronger soundtrack in my opinion, with several top-tier songs, but i'd like to highlight the third sanctuary and its ridiculous yet fluid time signatures. the song as a whole has a really driving energy to it, and that 23/8 part. truly the peak of the song. there's like at least three different ways to feel the rhythm in that section and i can switch between all three of them on the fly. the part at 1:47 is also quite fun to follow along with. i like to count it as 12/8, 11/8, 10/8, 12/8, 11/8, 11/8, 11/8, 12/8. has a really nice push and pull feel to it.

to highlight some less popular songs: paradise, paradise has a nice melody, especially at 1:22. as does old wooden rafters, which is seriously low on views considering how good it is. and ever higher is just cheerful and fun, especially the section starting at 1:05.

can we also talk about how masterfully guardian uses leitmotifs from from now on? the main dark sanctuary leitmotif appears in a bunch of different forms. first the narrower, darker-sounding version associated with the titans, extended in a 3-3-3-3-2-2 rhythm. then the original, wider version in its original 3-3-2 rhythm, bringing in a big burst of hope for the "chorus" of the song. (also the guitar that introduces that section is so cool!) then at the end of the song, we pair up the wider intervals with the extended rhythm for a determined feel that's not fully hope, but also not fully despair. absolutely insane how the same leitmotif can be manipulated into taking on three very different tones in one cohesive song.

but that's not even the leitmotif that i find the coolest here. a motif more unique to from now on is transformed into something much different-sounding in guardian. these are the only two tracks i could identify this motif in, and it's kind of hard to even realize they're the same motif at first because the rhythm is quite different, and the two just don't sound anything alike in the context of their respective songs. truly an amazing final boss theme to end off the gameplay of the new chapters.

...man that's a lot of stuff i wrote. can you tell i like the new songs a lot? say what you will about toby TAKING TOO LONG, the final result is worth it!

happy deltarune a month ago day! the chapter 3 and 4 soundtrack, to the surprise of nobody, is full of awesome new music. let's talk about the songs we like the best! (or anything else related to the soundtrack if you want)

BERDLY?!?!?!

(think they'll still enthusiastically accept berdly's invitation in chapter 4 though, just to mess with him if nothing else)

(and major chapter 2 spoilers too i guess)

(shocked ralsei sprite)]

for about 4 years, flashback (excerpt) was associated with only one context: the snowgrave hospital scene.

so when it's the first piece of music you hear in the post-demo content, in a context that has nothing to do with hospitals, deer, or murder...

yeah that gave me quite a bit of whiplash

the new chapters of deltarune are great. probably wasn't the best idea to play them both in the span of a single day but ah well

first post on lemmy in like ages (though i've been actively lurking). life's been busy

spring 2024 mini newsletter just dropped! saw a thing at the end of the interview with papyrus and thought it had great potential for a meme template. so have some undertale yellow. what fight are we talking about here? insert the same answer that martlet gave.

newsletter summary:

  • deltarune chapter 3's almost complete, and chapter 4 is underway
  • toby's changing the release plan for deltarune again, now chapters 3 and 4 (not 5 anymore) will be released for purchase together
  • there's a nice little dev team interview for deltarune chapter 2
  • various images of characters dressing up as each other!
  • a spoopy narrative to tie it all together

nice stuff!

it's not an easy question for me!

i'll highlight two from undertale: first, it's pretty cool how waterfall is kind of a "leitmotif bridge" between ruins and another medium / core. too bad snowy isn't connected in the same way

more notably: the way don't give up uses the variation of the ruins leitmotif from an ending / undyne's neutral death theme is pretty amazing. with pretty much the exact same melody and rhythm, it manages to go from depressing and emotional to inspiring... and emotional.

for deltarune, i'll highlight two from chapter 1 and one from chapter 2. i like how field of hopes and dreams, as the very first "proper" area theme, heavily emphasizes the don't forget leitmotif, using it in a cheerful, upbeat way.

as for one of the very last songs in chapter one, the way chaos king just blasts you with the legend section C in a refreshing burst of determination and hope that contrasts nicely with the rest of the theme... yeah even in chapter 1, despite lacking the various improvements of chapter 2, toby fox absolutely nailed it with everything music-wise.

and as for chapter 2, the way berdly's theme is incorporated into attack of the killer queen is both surprisingly subtle (especially since it actually takes up more of the song than queen's own leitmotif(!)) and, just, pleasant to listen to. in particular, i love the way they changed around the rhythm for section B of berdly's theme.
