I have a feeling it has more to do with low production cost than anything else sadly :/

What's so messed up to me is that the implants I design, inactive pieces of metal, are required to be operable for the life of our longest living patient PLUS 20 YEARS. Yet somehow as soon as electronics are involved they can get away with this. How long until pacemakers or insulin pumps need a license to continue functioning?

This is why I have an issue with privatized medicine.

Color film was, and still is, considerably more expensive than black and white. Probably just what they had in their camera!

Also most news papers didn't swap to color photography until the late 90s, so if it's a reporter it's likely they had black and white film

"Politics (from Ancient Greek πολιτικά (politiká) 'affairs of the cities') is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status. The branch of social science that studies politics and government is referred to as political science."

Definitionally, anything that prescribes the way things are to be distributed is political. There has been a desensitization to the word politics with an ever present right using words loosely adjacent to their true meaning, but capitalism is inherently political. Now it's a bit of a chicken and egg problem with western democracies kinda being formed around it, but that doesn't make it any less true. I sincerely doubt anyone would argue communism or socialism aren't political because they are economic theories.

Correct. I meant to say FOSS stuff, but my shame will live on the internet forever.

[-] Letto@reddthat.com 20 points 9 months ago

Well summarized!

The issue with FOSS software is it attracts people who use FOSS software. I'm not saying I want the reddit of 2021 back, but the reddit of 2016 would be nicer than the reddit of 2009 we are emulating now.

Once a few of us get our friends on board and we grow a touch more, I think Lemmy has a real chance of capturing some more of the "middle" tech literacy users, giving us some of what I, and I presume you, miss about Reddit.

Isn't it crazy you moved 5 hours away to be closer to family? I thought you told your boss.

Oftentimes they do not as it is quite expensive to make many kinds of "grey water" safe enough to be basically touched by golfers all the time. Being in the center of the desert with high water costs, it made sense in Arizona.

Regardless, keeping that much grass alive for such a small number of people to enjoy feels like a misalignment in priories of a local water authority to me. With the general trend towards water insecurities the world over I'm a bit upset with golf courses.

In my experience none of them taste great, but if you make them part of your daily flow you get over it pretty quickly. I've heard good things about the newer pre-mixed and flavored ones, but I got to a good place with my nutrition a few years ago and stopped using pretty much all meal replacements.

The day the twin towers went down.

That's almost exactly the difference. Mechanically, they are very similar with some expanded interactions and a bit more player agency. It feels more like playing d&d than ever before.

The SCOPE of the story is on an entirely different level. I've only played the first 10 hours, but I've done so almost 4 times, and each run through has felt >70% unique. Choices have weight, options are meaningful and plentiful, character interactions are some of the closest I've felt to interacting with other players in a turn based RPG.

Is it going to shock the world like Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild? No, probably not. It does show what can be accomplished by a great team of driven writers and programmers who actually care.

Definitely worth a try if you can pay the entry fee.
