The point about the "veneer of respectability" is exactly why I'm now an anti-theist and not just an atheist. If religions weren't inherently harmful to all people it may be different; unfortunately the most popular religions harm not just their adherents but everyone else as well. We, as a society, should not abide that.

I definitely agree with that. They think their conscience is "the voice of God" even when it specifically contradicts their preferred fable.
I don't think that most "lack" a conscience. I do think their conscience is either malformed or severely stunted.
Damn I thought about that a couple months back and yeah, I remember playing it as a kid. I think it quickly got changed to cops and robbers, so maybe I was at the tail-end of that version; sure was a fucked-up thing to call a kids game.
