I've heard before that a key hallmark of liberalism throughout history is exceptions to its own tenants while continuing to claim the moral high ground.

Seems to fit here quite nicely.

Don't they have plans to break out any US soldier about to stand trial in the ICC/Hauge?

[-] LordOfLocksley@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago

Yes, part of George Bush Jr's administration put that in place

[-] MeowZedong@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 5 months ago

Lol, you got down-voted for mentioning a real US law that's been in existence for over 20 years. Someone doesn't like reality.

You know Biden is not part of the House and the House is run by Republicans, right?

Biden denounces ICC for ‘outrageous’ implication of equivalence between Israel and Hamas

The Biden administration on Monday forcefully denounced efforts by the International Criminal Court to seek arrest warrants for top Israeli officials and Hamas leaders, saying the court’s efforts put the terrorist organization and a top US ally on equivalent footing.

[-] BrokenGlepnir@lemmy.world 15 points 5 months ago

Denouncing is different from state sanctions. How biden has implicated that he opposes this bill according to the BBC https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cm5512l7yero

[-] EchoCT@lemmy.ml 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

In the interest of learning, the ICC is not a state actor, so what exactly is the difference in this case?

EDIT: The sanction is actual travel and economic restrictions on members of the ICC. "Denounce" is the typical posturing. For those who care...

OK, so replace his photo with any congressperson if you insist on being so pedantic.

The point is the absurdity of american government, which Biden as the president, is a symbol of.

When advantageous, most republicans would also claim that the US respects international law, then turn around and pass a vote like this.

EDIT: about a third of house dems supported the bill

[-] takeda@lemmy.world 20 points 5 months ago

Well Mike Johnson would be most fitting as he is the speaker and decides which bills are up for a vote.

[-] RustyShackleford@literature.cafe 6 points 5 months ago

They probably don’t, but obfuscation gets more clicks when trolling for engagement.

Way to completely miss the point. He's obviously there cuz he's the current US president.

If they wanted to dunk on biden specifically of course, they could've just pointed out how he's has been bypassing congress to send weapons to israel faster, or how he walked back the few sanctions on israeli settlers that were only for optics anyway since it was to pretend as if the state itself wasn't behind it, but this is just the most recent shit the US is doing.

Edit: Looks like Biden does agree with the move against the ICC too, so there's no need to bring up all the other shit he's done specifically.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

Under the caption about something the House did...

[-] Alsephina@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

If you're gonna be such a pedantic shitlib, should I edit the caption to be something from this article Linkerbaan mentioned? Since it's about this incident specifically.

Why go out of your way so much to try defending a fascist? Why do you have an image saved on your device to defend this piece of shit online?

[-] BrokenGlepnir@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Linkerbaan's article isn't on this bill. Articles on this bill say he doesn't support it https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cm5512l7yero

Again denouncing and sanctioning have differences. He wags his finger, but he is against punching them down.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

I'd be Ok with changing that caption, don't blame Biden for the stupid shit the House is doing.

For the idiots trying to defend this piece of shit and claiming this is done by biden's "opposition" or whatever, he obviously does agree with the move.

A bit disingenuous to put a picture of the head of the executive branch under a comment about a legislative body’s passed bill.

[-] Alsephina@lemmy.ml 7 points 5 months ago

He agrees with it like you'd expect so no need to worry.

Regardless, he is the face of the US empire right now. Makes sense to have his pic when the US is doing something again

[-] absentbird@lemm.ee 12 points 5 months ago

Except Biden put out a statement opposing this legislation:

The Administration strongly opposes H.R. 8282, the “Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act.” H.R. 8282 would impose mandatory sanctions and visa restrictions on any foreign person determined to aid, materially assist, or provide financial support for efforts by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to undertake certain investigations and prosecutions, among others. This legislation could require sanctions against court staff, judges, witnesses, and U.S. allies and partners who provide even limited, targeted support to the court in a range of aspects of its work.

The Administration is deeply concerned about the ICC Prosecutor’s heedless rush to apply for arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials. At the same time, the Administration opposes the imposition of sanctions against the ICC, its personnel, its judges, or those who assist its work. There are more effective ways to defend Israel, preserve U.S. positions on the ICC, and promote international justice and accountability, and the Administration stands ready to work with the Congress on those options.

Source

Just because he said something else critical of the ICC doesn't mean he supports the house sanctions.

“It’s clear Israel wants to do all it can to ensure civilian protection,” Biden said. “Let me be clear: What’s happening is not genocide.”

In capitalist society, providing it develops under the most favorable conditions, we have a more or less complete democracy in the democratic republic. But this democracy is always hemmed in by the narrow limits set by capitalist exploitation and consequently always remains, in effect, a democracy for the minority, only for the propertied classes, only for the rich. Freedom in capitalist society always remains about the same as it was in the ancient Greek republics: freedom for the slave owners.

Double standard when it comes to their interest.

[-] takeda@lemmy.world 6 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

The picture shows Biden but the text says House which is controlled by Republicans.

Very disingenuous. Not even the same branch of the government.

I thought that the USA never signed the ICC agreement.

[-] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

Yes in fact the US tried to thwart the creation of the ICC as much as they possibly could. The Israel question has been the biggest reason all along. But also they didn’t want Bush being prosecuted for invading Iraq.
