These stages are very work related. Burnout does not have to be work related. A long term stressful situation, like a divorce, can definitely cause burnout as well.

I've been at the coping with substances stage for over two decades. Currently doing without. This is where people are supposed to say that finally things are starting to look up again and they can focus on rebuilding themselves... but in all honesty, I find life without my prior escapes drab, boring, completely devoid of meaning and of any type of hope of a better future.

So back to substances or to the grave. Personally, I'm not too miffed about either option. I'll get what I get, as I always have.
