For starters, the mormon church doesn't house or assist directly with housing over a million people like the US government does. (I couldn't find accurate stats to use, so I used an educated guess.)

Also the Mormons don't have a military to pay for (anymore).

Generally, it's just shallow Little-Utah thoughtless nonsense though... also about par for the course.

The highest tax rate on income is 37%. The effective tax rate of the people who have income in that bracket is significantly lower.

You're only considering federal income tax. There's also state income tax, sales tax, property tax, social security, and other state taxes. It's nearly 50% in many cases.
