We simply didn't offer enough threat to deserve to go through at this level of the CL.

We need an elite striker so badly. Bayern have Kane. PSG have Mbappe. Barca have Lewandowski. Real have Vini Jr. City have Haaland.

We don't have a goalscorer on that sort of level.

[–] Oneser@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago

While I understand your sentiment, I feel Kane did not show anything special for Bayern tonight and Haaland got dragged at 90 for City.

Our current system should be supplying goals from the wingers, so when they dry up or are effectively blocked then so do our chances. We have improved, but teams are getting better at stopping us in our tracks.

Also, we need mental stability, and that only comes with experience in my opinion.

Bright side, Spurs are not gonna make CL lmfao

Another bright side: we've traditionally got shellacked in Munich. Losing there again still sucks, but it was a narrow result and we put in a decent account of ourselves. And we made it to the QFs ~~on our first time back in the CL for several seasons~~ for the first time in a long time. The rebuild project isn't done yet, but overall we're heading in the right direction.

honestly this is how I feel about today. Not great, but we played good, and it's our first year back. Only up from here still.

[–] nuggsy@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I didn't expect us to win against Bayern. You could also argue that the refs did us over in both legs. But, we had plenty of good chances and didn't take them. We are still struggling to create goals in the final third against tough opposition, which is worrying.

On a positive, our performance didn't drop off a cliff in the 2nd half.

[–] MHPengwingz@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

We didn't fall over for them after the goal. Overall it isn't much of an embarrassing performance.

[–] MHPengwingz@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm quite concerned how it will affect the team's psyche for the rest of the season. We still have a few games to go and only 2 points back.

[–] nuggsy@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Same, but they picked themselves up after our previous game. I trust them and Arteta to focus on the next game

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Honestly at this point, our best hope is for City to tire themselves out by getting as far as possible in the CL and for us to just win the rest of our matches. If you'd asked me 2 months ago, I would have said that was easy. :/

[–] MHPengwingz@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Agree. Liverpool have already fizzled out. I can't see where City may slip up, but at least we can concentrate on the rest of the season.

[–] Astrealix@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (3 children)

ngl i wouldn't be so pissed if the refs weren't just horrible. We did pretty good, the result wasn't to our liking but I don't mind how we did honestly.

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

I don't think we did great at progressing the balls centrally, but everyone tries to stop us from doing that. Refs cheated us out of a few corners and free kicks, but more importantly they basically took Odegaard out of the game when they failed to punish Bayern from targeting him.

[–] MHPengwingz@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

I agree. We never get any calls for us. It wasn't a terrible performance, Henry said at halftime that this match both teams were playing not to lose. He's right, Bayern weren't really guns ablazing either. But we lost a bit of composure and sure enough, it's a learning curve. We'll be back next season.

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I'm really worried about this recent trend where our performance drops off in the second half, though. It might just be fitness but if we screw up even once the title is basically guaranteed to be gone.

Go watch the fallout show regardless if you have prime video or not. That's what I'll do.

[–] nuggsy@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I 2nd this. Definitely recommend

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

3rd. It's a great show.

[–] Astrealix@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (3 children)

possibly a hot take: should Saka be taken off corners? I know there's part of it that feels a little reactionary but I also genuinely think he's not that good at them compared to what they could / should be

[–] MHPengwingz@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

I've been saying his corners need some work

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I think that's too reactionary until we see what fitness issues he's been dealing with. It stands to reason that once that's fixed, his overall performance will improve. If he's fit and still not great, then I'm all for taking him off. Maybe Odegaard and Saka switch (i.e. Saka stands in the short corner spot)?

[–] hangonasecond@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

If his corners are being affected by his fitness, he should be taken off them until he is better. Maybe one of the fullbacks has a secret talent, lol?

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Unfortunately he is still our Starboy and the only one that I think would replace him is Odegaard or maybe White (although he's on permanent goalkeeper shithouse duty).

[–] hangonasecond@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This is true. The real answer is, he just needs to be better. He will be.

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Goes for a lot of the boys right now, unfortunately. The only bright spot is that they're young. Lessons is what they need right now.

[–] Astrealix@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Tbh we don't really have anyone that good at set pieces. Maybe Raya /j

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

How fast do you think he can get back to his box? There's some potential here

[–] nuggsy@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Yeah, it's not a terrible idea. We started to get Rice to take corners on the left which has worked a few times

They've now lost on penalties.

I feel conflicted about this. One of my mates is a City fan, but he's a really good sport about things and not a dick. So I feel bad for him. Plus, the silver lining to them staying in the tournament is that the extra fixtures tire them out, and that helps us. But them going out now it's also satisfying, NGL.

[–] raumdeuter@mastodon.social 2 points 10 months ago

well, extra fixtures didn't tire them out last season, maybe disappointment will.

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Welp. Now it's just a dead heat, minus 2 points. Unfortunately I don't think City are going to blink anytime soon.
