I'm confused, bringing posts from Reddit seems like a waste of time, no-one replies, it's extra, unnescessary load for the servers. Why is this tolerated?

because lemmy is so new that some communities don't have much content?

when communities are empty, it makes it hard to participate, you don't know what's worth posting. Having some posts up give people something to read while others (hopefully) post stuff.

it's like the host and their friends at a party - someone needs to start chatting and playing music and having fun, etc.

"Oh boy, a new community! I wonder what it's for?"

checks posts

"OH, It's for bots to repost from reddit. There are no people here."

maybe 50% of people will respond like you, and maybe 50% will be encouraged to post content.

in a month's time, 20% will respond like you, and 80% will be encouraged to post content.

Yeah, but reposting from reddit is like putting on a video of a great conversation at a cool party. We're watching the tv, not participating in our own party. Idk seems desperate.

reposting means you can make new comments here.

if you don't like it, be part of the solution! post more original content, and then you'll see less reposts.

I guess some people miss the content from Reddit. IMO it's not really necessary at all.

By the way, when you say "here", do you mean you found some lemm.ee community doing this? Or are you talking about lemmit?

I haven't seen any egregious offending bots here on Lemm.ee. All the bots I've blocked have come from Lemmy.World so far.

I agree that it's not necessary and as a refugee I would far prefer to see fewer, but more quality posts with actual engagement. Recreating the current Reddit experience also recreates the current Reddit issues. I've found more legitimately interesting things in the past couple of weeks here than I have in a long time on Reddit so far.

Reddit has a lot of useful content. Keeping a copy of them here makes sense in case:

  • OP decides to delete posts from Reddit
  • Reddit decides to limit access to registered users only
  • Reddit burns down (unlikely tho)
[-] Arcane_Trixster@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Seems odd to be copying others posts to prevent it from being deleted, when I've seen so many users here proudly say they've been nuking all their posts and comments to sow confusion in web searches and prevent reddit from "using their content".

I think the repost bots are awkward. Seeing so many posts in "hot" and "new" with zero comments makes the site feel dead. I don't want to engage with a bot, and it makes it very difficult to find real, user generated content when most feeds are clogged with bot-copied text posts.

I don't mind it for some informational posts but for some communities it makes zero sense. Like I saw a ton of "am I the Asshole" bot reposts, where the point of the content is to engage with the OP. I can't think of anyone that would want that as just a repost.

Because a few people want it apparently. You can block the bot reposting content and you won't see it anymore.

One of the good things about reddit was the bulk of knowledge already there...

Reposting memes makes no sense, but TIL, DIY, and random tech subs have a lot of good info going back a decade

[-] kobra@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, this is it. I've also been slightly annoyed at the bot posts because it's just a firehose of content without any interaction. However, for the useful info subs, I think its a small price to pay to make sure that information is propagated outside of reddit's servers.

Define "here"

[-] MixedRaceHumanAI@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

It's like you recently acquired a TV station and its frequencies, and you have to deal with production companies to broadcast their content onto your studio/station.
