Nobody's gonna buy it, but Motorola gets to say they tried and there just wasn't a market for GrapheneOS.

[–] Hueristic_Autistic@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Modern Nokia should get into it 😤😭

1,900 Euro equals 2,117.10 United States Dollar

[–] zarkony@lemmy.zip 10 points 7 hours ago

1900 euros for 512 gb with no sd card slot. 24-bit/192kHz audio support, but no headphone jack. Why even bother?

I really hope the next generation of Moto G gets graphene support. Somehow their low end phones end up with more useful features than the flagships.

There is no phone on earth that should cost 2000 fucking dollars

[–] Saarth@lemmy.world 12 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

For phones like these, which are primarily going to be used by nerds, tech enthusiasts and tinkerers, this is poor launch strategy from Motorola.

Most of the audience for something like this will be turned off by this and all the hype they generated will fizzle out a bit.

They should have started with a mid range launch first, get enthusiasts to rave about it and then upsell these extravagant features to less involved consumers.

Signature is their pro max. Just wait for a new "edge" with GrapheneOS support.

Not justifying the price, its stupid expensive. But please don't act like this will be the only Motorola with GrapheneOS support.

[–] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

Uh it must be a whole lot more than their pro max because the IPhone 18 pro max was only $1,300

What is the point of a 1900€ phone? What is the target audience? How is it better than a 500€ phone?

Questions more towards Motorola than Graphene, but I doubt the Graphene foundation went into the partnership without knowing what kinds of specific phones would be covered.

In general, flagships get longer software support, much faster processors, sometimes more RAM and storage and usually better cameras.

In particular, this one seems to have a ridiculous camera setup with 200MP (remains to be seen if it's actually great or just an inflated amount of pixels) and a 7000 mAh battery compared to e.g pixel 11 pro xl's 5115.

And you can choose between 12 or 16 gigs of RAM. RAM is very expensive right now. Also promising a ridiculously bright screen so maybe this one will be useable outdoors?

There's no reason for a phone to be that expensive. Laptops are cheaper and they do more wtaf

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 hours ago

I can get a decent laptop, a phone and a nice diner for 2 for less than that.

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 26 points 13 hours ago (3 children)

If it costs that much, it better come with at least 10 years of updates. And I guarantee it won't.

[–] GeirGrusom@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

Nothing can justify that price. They're just charging that because they think they can.

Completely wrong target for GrapheneOS. The GrapheneOS demographics, which I belong to, isn't interested in high-end phones. They want a no nonsense simple phone with lots of storage and security first design.

  • fancy AMOLED screen: don't care
  • 5 fancy cameras: don't care
  • super powerful CPU and GPU: don't care
  • storage space: yes please, I have photos and music to store locally!

This will be harmful to GrapheneOS project. It will go like this: no one buys the phone because it's too damn expensive and full of features the privacy nerds like me don't care about. Even fewer buy the phone with GrapheneOS pre-installed and it's a total flop. Motorola stops the partnership saying "we did it and no one wanted it". No other OEM wants to partner with GrapheneOS after that.

I do want amoled and good gpu and cpu with graphene

What is this obsession with cramming 5+ cameras into phones

If Graphene is reading this: You just lost me and my family. Will look for other options. Woo hang on to the Pixels till we can't.

[–] XiJinpingStanAccount@lemmy.ml 21 points 12 hours ago (4 children)

Well I don't think Graphene OS devs chose the price of the phone lol. This is just the Motorola phone that has the hardware Graphene requires. Like a security chip. Give it a few years and this phone will be on the used market for 400$.

Don't blame Graphene for Motorola's hardware.
