Well I don't think Graphene OS devs chose the price of the phone lol. This is just the Motorola phone that has the hardware Graphene requires. Like a security chip. Give it a few years and this phone will be on the used market for 400$.

I find hard toiImagine GOS went into a deal without clearly defining the parameters of the partnership, which in my silly mind assume it to include the specifications of the hardware, desired price point, amongst the many many other things.

Also an $800 phone would be $150 on the used market in the same few years.

Meanwhile there are some dudes from the West running around factories in China right now getting a custom phone built to their specifications. And somewhere between the two extremes lie a multitude of outcomes that would have been far better than this one.

I'd like to hear GOS official rationale to this one.

Well you realize there are two sides to a partnership right? Motorola is a for profit company. They want to make money. They're not gonna subsidize our security. Graphene likely will support their cheaper phones in the future, but part of the deal was this phone being first I'm sure.

We'll have to wait and see...

Not speaking to the viability of GOS's opinion of Motorola's pricing on this having any effect or their options for influencing that price, but I do think you are giving the GOS devs far more credit than I have ever seen them earn when it comes to business savvy.

As much as I support the projects mission and their willingness to call a spade a spade, the people that run the project would get eaten alive in an actual board room discussing things like gross revenue and per component margins. Which is where these kinds of decisions are made.
