They didn't, though. Their shareholders did. Big difference.

Sort of. Nvidia buys billions of dollars worth of its own shares every year and retires the shares in order to drum up the value of the rest of the shares people own, so it's kind of like it wasted billions of dollars if the price fell back down.

Wasted is a relative term since the remaining shareholders see the percentage of the company they own increase and the stock price dropping makes it cheaper to buy more shares thus continuing to drive up the percentage of the company owned by the remaining shareholders

You missed a step. if the price goes down, the current share holders lost money, regardless of how big a percentage of the company they own in stock is.

Anyone know where I could find, oh I dunno, maybe a quarter or one of these “lost” billions?

time to hit them with their beloved "but how are we going to pay for it?" line.

if the stock value dropped 50% will it affect them as much as it would a bank whos investments dropped 50% or loans defaulted

[–] neidu4@piefed.social 12 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Not really. The shareholders will experience the pain, but the company probably wouldn't, as their liabilities are rarely tied to share price.

that's what I thought. Google losing 50% just means my retirement fund got smaller and there is no downside for google

Ngl, I contributed to it. I cashed out a chunk of my stock right when things started. And before someone says something about leaving it in, I needed the money for some other stuff so I planned on pulling it out anyway.

What happened in the last two days to cause such a drop?

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

This is moreso over the last week. Investors seem to be finally questioning how AI is going to turn a profit.

[–] Hyperion@midwest.social 3 points 11 hours ago

People took investing advice from the Underpants Gnomes. Step one: Develop AI. Step two: ?. Step three: Profit!

They're trying to manipulate shit to make it look like fuck ass when democrats take a shred of power back today.

when bailouts were issued due to market valuation? as long as they can may their debts, which is a different issue, although not impossible to happen

Too big to bail!
