I have a comrade up in Montreal looking to join an ML party and they're having trouble finding a group that isn't Trotsky-ist. Would anyone be able to provide some perspective and advice around the landscape of ML parties in Canada more broadly and Quebec in particular. Thanks!

Who are there so many Trotskyists?

Trotsky is more acceptable for intelligence agencies to foment/create - it funnels revolutionary activism into orgs that ultimately do nothing because they don't believe socialism can exist without the entire world striving equally towards it - and therefore make little to no gains where they are.

Popular Front of Canada seems pretty legit, very new but looks to have a strong foundation.

France's New Popular Front and La France Insoumise provides the only genuine & viable model for socialist organizing within Canada https://www.popularfront.ca/history-of-the-popular-front

They don't seem very ML though, maybe not quite what they are looking for...

Also, the New Popular Front (NFP) and the NUPES before it were awful tactical and ideological mistakes for LFI that only served to save the "socialist" party from the grave, and now the NFP name is used by only the few nobodies that still dream of a united succdem candidacy for the presidency (which would also be a tactical blunder), so I would absolutely disagree with their assessment of the NFP

The two main ML groups in Canada are the Communist Party of Canada and the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist). There's also the Young Communist League which is associated with the CPC but organisationally independent.

The CPC dates back to 1921 and always stuck to the USSR line, including becoming anti-Stalin in 1956 etc. Over the decades since USSR collapsed, the party has drifted more towards stalin good, but some older members still have khurshchev brainworms.

The latter started as student Maoists in the 60s, then they sided with Hoxha in the Sino-Albanian split. Over last while, they have drifted more towards standard Marxism-Leninism, and at their last congress they renounced Maoism for Marxism-Leninism but still uphold Mao.

The main thing keeping the cpcml and cpc seperate where I am (idk about montreal) is old peoples petty personal drama ime.

There's also the (New) Communist Party of Canada, but i'm unsure if they are MLs or Maoists.

Not sure if cpcml has presence in quebec, but the cpc/pcc and ycl/ljc should have clubs in montreal at least

The CPC local in my area moves at a glacial pace, with no plans to expand or take hold of the current moment, at least from what I've seen. I don't think they're a good representation for an ML group, or they'd be more inclined to work with other ML groups, like the one I'm part of.

Edit - though I suppose officially recognized parties are subject to different rules. But to me that just means that focusing on growing before attaching yourself to the apparatus is a better idea.

The CPC ~~local in my area~~ moves at a glacial pace

yea

It suffers a lot from being mostly old people. The YCL is doing better, and the younger CPCers are often great, but yeah its tedious
