Students are being taught that Britain must forge closer links with China in a textbook accused of peddling “propaganda”, The Telegraph can reveal.

The A-level book, widely used in schools by British teenagers studying Mandarin, says the UK should “deepen cooperation” with Beijing in the wake of Brexit.

Using language associated with the People’s Republic of China (PRC), it also promotes:

  • China’s Belt and Road Initiative
  • The “positive impact” of Chinese students coming to the UK
  • The “crucial role” of Confucius Institutes

...

Pearson, the UK’s largest education and assessment company, which endorses the textbook for students taking its Edexcel A-level Chinese qualification, launched a review on Monday night.

....

Luke de Pulford, co-founder of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, an international group of legislators working to reform the approach of democratic countries to China, likened parts of the textbook to “approved CCP propaganda”.

He said: “This is not an education, but an indoctrination. It would be an understatement to call these passages one-sided.”

...

The book titled “Chinese for A-Level” is published by Cypress Books, which describes itself as the largest distributor for Chinese publications in the UK. A spokesman denied the book was propaganda.

The London-based company is under the overall control of the China International Communications Group (CICG) – the public relations and publishing arm of the Communist Party of China (CCP).

...

In one section of the textbook, students are asked to translate into Mandarin a 124-word passage written in English that describes how Brexit has weakened the UK’s financial standing.

The passage states that the growth of trade between the UK and China has “stalled” in recent years as “the market uncertainty created by the UK’s exit from the EU has weakened its influence in the global financial system, causing China to be more cautious about investing in the UK”.

It says that “in light of these circumstances”, the two countries “must enhance communication, seek win-win cooperation opportunities, and find mutually beneficial solutions”.

The phrase “win-win cooperation” is a favourite of the CCP. It was first used by Xi Jinping, the CCP’s general secretary, during a state visit to Russia in 2013, where he reportedly proposed a “new type of international relations featuring win-win cooperation”. Chinese officials use it frequently in official statements about foreign policy and international relations.

The phrase is used again in another passage – this one written in Mandarin that students are asked to translate into English – which states that the UK and China should “deepen their cooperation”.

...

The textbook also repeatedly states that the UK and China should seek cooperation and trade outcomes that are “mutually beneficial”, which is another commonly used phrase by the CCP.

Mr de Pulford said: “These excerpts are – word for word – approved CCP propaganda. When Beijing says ‘win-win cooperation’ they mean that Xi Jinping’s Party-State wins twice.”

...

In an exercise, students are asked to describe the “positive impact” of the presence of Chinese students in the UK.

The book describes some “challenges”, including visa restrictions and funding limitations, but makes no mention of the growing concerns about Chinese interference at British universities in recent years or the fears of espionage.

Last month, MI5 issued an unprecedented public alert to universities warning that China’s intelligence service was using a front company to fund research by UK academics which it was using to improve its spying capabilities.

...

This chapter also praises the “crucial role” of the Confucius Institutes, the controversial units embedded in universities around the world which are run and part-funded by an arm of the Chinese state.

The institutes have been accused of acting as a front for the CCP to spread propaganda, spy on students, and clamp down on critical views of Beijing.

The UK has been reported to have 30 of the institutes – more than any other country – including at the universities of Manchester, Coventry and Liverpool.

The phrase “win-win cooperation” is a favourite of the CCP.

And a favourite of every manager I had in the 90s and early noughties - this is not exactly an uncommon phrase - it's up there with "low hanging fruit" in the corporate speak lexicon

This is the telegraph, if they got an extra won ton in their Chinese takeaways they would think China is trying to influence them.

If the Torygraph told me I have legs I'd have to look down and check

These Brits are so used to the fruits of imperialism that they think the idea of mutually beneficial trade outcomes is perfidious Chinese propaganda. Ridiculous. Genuinely how lost do you have to be to think this. Also,

the market uncertainty created by the UK’s exit from the EU has weakened its influence in the global financial system, causing China to be more cautious about investing in the UK

Does anyone even deny this? This could as well have been from the bbc.

Cooperating and trading with China = evil and bad

Cooperating and trading with Israel = neutral and fine

[–] tardigrade@scribe.disroot.org -4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

This has nothing to do with Israel.

And it has nothing to do with 'cooperating and trading" with China. Just read the article.

I don't want children to be poisoned with this garbage.

Win-win cooperation = evil seeseepee plot to undermine the west

I read the article you absolute snowflake

[–] tardigrade@scribe.disroot.org -5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, yeah. You are one of these children who are already misled.

[–] ns1@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago

Of course they are, just look at what instance they're from.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh you're actually siding against China and don't think Brexit was the worst thing to happen to the UK since 1945? Holy shit L M A O 🤣

[–] Vinnyboiler@feddit.uk -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know why you siding with Confucius Institutes. You are seriously siding with the Chinese government meddling with our universities?

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

You say that like the 5 Eyes aren't meddling in universities everywhere else, including China. And between the two governments, one of them has almost abolished homelessness, is on the road to eradicating poverty, feeds and provides healthcare for all its citizens, and has become the manufacturer of the world.

The other government is a monarchy filled with racist pedophiles who spend ridiculous amounts of money on elaborate weddings while buildings collapse due to negligence, kids go hungry, and institutional transphobia deliberately harming trans people (especially trans women) is reinforced/expanded. Their economy is being held up by a toy company.

So which country would you rather have influencing universities? The one dedicated to actual science with decades of progress as it expands high speed rail and now has the most journal citations than anywhere else? Or the country where so-called "race realists," TERFs, and zionists are allowed to peddle their nonsense with government protection?

You're so worried about losing the empire you're lashing out at a country that's a force for good. Stop clinging to jingoistic idealism and start looking at measurable, quantifiable results.

provides healthcare for all its citizens

Their private healthcare is actually one of my biggest criticisms of China; despite the Tories best efforts, the UK has a superior healthcare system.

That and putting TCM in pharmacies like real medicine. I accidentally performed a blind test when I went to what looked like a real pharmacy for allergies and they gave me what looked like normal pills, in a blister pack inside a cardboard box, just like normal medication, and then after 2 days of them having zero effect, read the ingredients and saw it was bear bile and a dozen other random things.

reality doesn't agree with you champ

[–] O__O@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

The UK definitely should trade more with China. However, this would upset the US so much like with the superior Chinese EVs the UK will put tariffs on Chinese goods and shoot themselves in the foot to keep the failing US empire happy

[–] ns1@feddit.uk 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sounds like this is not exactly surprising, when the publisher of the textbook is known to be controlled by part of the Chinese government.

Just because I might agree with some of these statements, like Brexit bring bad, doesn't mean it's not propaganda.

[–] Womble@piefed.world 7 points 1 day ago

The only bit that seems controversial is the praising of the Confucian institutes, that is suspect. But "Brexit was a hindrance", "win-win trade is good" and "Chinese students in the UK is good actually" are hardly controversial points for anyone who isn't an outright nutter.

You're dreary little rock in the sea is nowhere near important enough to justify the level of conspiracy you have imagined on the part of a real country.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

What country doesn't do this?
