President signed the legislation championed by late senator Lindsey Graham last month but has waived the restrictions as they were due to come into effect

Maybe "the West" no longer exists. There's just the US and then there's Europe, and each of them is doing their own thing.

Remember when this guy said no one was tougher on Russia than him? Oh Lordy, and his base just ate it up.

[–] BlindPenguin@piefed.social 30 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Well, he didn't specify what part of him was tougher on Russia. Some lube was required.

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago

This is also the guy that said he trusts Putin over his own intelligence agencies.

Article III, Section 3, Clause 1:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

Check. Check. And check. Now what?

Find a committee with balls?

Trump instigated the situation to justify doing this. Period.

It was always going to end this way because Putin ordered it, and he has enough video on Trump and his billionaire pals to get what he wants.

If only Epstein had lived long enough to see what power he still wields in this world— wars, fascism, racism, genocide—can all be laid at his feet because rich people like to rape enslaved women & children and therefore the tapes exist. What a proud moment for Epstein.

Maybe Putin doesn't need video of Trump. Maybe Trump's admiration of dictators like Putin is all Putin needs to get Trump to do the Kremlin's bidding.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 14 points 5 days ago

It's both. I am sure that the ex-KGB man Putin has more dirt on Trump than you could fit into all of Mar-a-Lago's bathrooms. And Trump wished he were smart enough to really be a dictator (just as he always tried to be accepted in NY and failing miserably), making him all buddy-buddy with his (smarter, actually "competent") autocrats and dictators (who laugh behind his back and use him just like the tool he is).

I hate that everyone is just letting this guy walk all over the constitution. At any time they could stop him, but they don't want too no matter how much they say they do.

They created this monster, and they are stuck with the consequences regardless of whether they want it or not. Obligatory fuck neoliberals too, and Gavin Newsom in particular.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Woah now, are you seriously asking Congress to do their job and govern? When they can just sit around and collect all that sweet ~~bribe~~ lobby money. They want this executive fiat to make their lives easier. The whole government has been heading this way for a long time.

They created this monster and we are stuck with the consequences.

Impeach and convict.

[–] douglasg14b@lemmy.world 30 points 5 days ago (1 children)

So the executive branch, exercising power it literally doesn't have to exercise?

[–] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 20 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I mean, they've been doing that for 2 years.

Yeh, there seems to be an effort to dismantle both the EU, US, and any western agreements like five eyes. There have been other times when men gathered in a room and carved up the world.... I wasn't thinking it be in my lifetime when this is attempted again.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 17 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I would have NO objections at all regarding dismantling of the Five Eyes - this surveillance shit can get fucked.

I have mild objections regarding dismantling of NATO - as a defensive pact it fulfills an important role, but it might be superceded by something not dependent on the increasingly unstable US and that would be fine.

I have massive objections regarding dismantling of the EU - this is the largest economic and peace project Europe has ever seen, and has brought prosperity all over the continent. I have my gripes with its structure - the EU Parliament needs more tools, and the Commission needs less (the commission is an completely undemocratic blob in the middle of an otherwise pretty democratic structure, as seen with the commissions regular push for spying on citizens), and also we have to change the rules which need 100% of countries to agree in general, because it causes everything to be soooo slow (and easily disrupted by outside forces), but in general the EU is a pretty successful project.

The good thing is - all european states KNOW that the EU is needed nowadays. We can't realistically go back into a time where a small land mass as we are is splintered into scores of small pieces.

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The problem with the EU is that it proves democracy, and giving power to working class people, can work. Which is a huge threat to Putin and the CCP.

As Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (ex-president of Portugal) once said: Trump is a Russian asset.

United States need to get rid of him, fast.
