As an American it was always somewhat puzzling to understand the deeper drivers of cultural differences between the Canadian provinces having never been anywhere but BC and briefly, but the book "On Oil" is a great recent history of the spread of oil culture and money in Alberta, the Texas influences and ties there and helps frame why so much money and media influence is being welded against Canadian values and democracy right now.

It's short and incredibly informative. https://www.biblioasis.com/shop/new-releases/on-oil/

Newfoundland & Labrador is the least americanised english speaking province.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 week ago (6 children)

"English speaking".

/S

Sorry, transplanted Nova Scotian in Ontario. I love Newfoundlanders. I just can't understand them when they get drunk and start talking to each other.

[–] Sturgist@piefed.ca 15 points 1 week ago

Used to work with an Irishman in Vancouver. We were drinking in a bar by site after work on a Friday and I had to stop him from starting a fight with a group of 6 Newfs because he thought they were making fun of him.
We ended up having a good laugh with them about it after he'd chilled out, but it was touch and go for a minute there....

[–] Canajan@piefed.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Stay where ur at bye, I’ll come where ya too.

[–] Riverview_Legal@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

I was at the bar with my Uncle when we were talking to a Newfoundlander and non-Newfoundlander. The non-Newfoundlander was amazed my Uncle could understand the Newfoundlander.

Ill paint a picture:

Lots of cattle farming in Alberta too, so there isn't a lot of new age thinkers there who care about factory farming pollution of water systems, and that all that farm land could feed more people, and the terrible conditions animals live in.

So when I've gone on work trips all the food places at hotels and events are all beef/rib products and fries. Finding a salad or some vegetarian protien is difficult.

I went on a two-three day work trip and lost 5lbs from lack of food choices.

Talking to them is like being in Hicksville, with lifted smokey diesel trucks, etc.

The boot represents inequality and $700 monthly insurance plans that cover 30% of healthcare needs.

There's a strip of loonies, crazies, and idiots that runs south from the north pole down through Alberta then through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona and then peters out in the ocean around Baja Ca.

Complete fucking lunatics by most sane standards. Puppy shooters. Goddists. (goddists aplenty I tell you - there are some weird ones.

"want to be free"...? of what? having a nice country to live in? Having shit to do that pays the bills? What the fuck? Tell me, what is the carrot they're dangling that says "take Alberta away from the people and give it to the corporations".

Seriously? What the actual fuck is the matter with you people ? Too much moose juice?

Having your government side with fascists is not a good idea.

[–] n7gifmdn@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

“want to be free”…? of what?

Its just about wanting lower taxes, that's it.

There's no way this can be right.

Not to perpetuate the perception that leftists constantly argue about everything..... But I think the strip of lunatics tends to take a hard right toward the gulf coast once it reaches Missouri.

It would be so funny if Alberta successfully exited Canada to lose all of those Canadian perks, like nationalized healthcare. Welcome to the free market baby.

The face Americans make at them after Albertans get a 100K hospital bill after losing socialized medicine:

It is however literally impossible to have happen, Alberta is not their land, it is treaty 6 land.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That is just not true... 😆

It's 6,7 and 8

And a teeny bit 4 and 10

The regional management of the province of Alberta seems to be privatizing as much healthcare as possible, and as quickly as possible. An american "ha ha" style healthcare is already their goal, and the people voting for them don't seem to understand the notion of Finding Out.

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

UCP claims that healthcare is a Bolshevik plot!

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Jokes on you, Alberta already gutted their health care!

[–] LocalAreaMan@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If that happens then Cascadia must happen.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (4 children)

When you look at the geography and political identity of the US and Canada, its mildly surprising that this didn't happen sooner.

Not holding my breath, though. The ties that bind regions within a nation are ultimately far more about bureaucracy than culture or identity.

And Albertans think the US would give two shits what Alberta wants over remaining in Canada? 😂

[–] davetortoise@reddthat.com 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I oppose Alberta separatism primarily because of the border gore it would create. Like yeah sure there are plenty of other reasons why it would suck, but the Canada-US border is pretty stupid as it is and this would make it 1000x worse.

First thing America will do to Alberta is let the rats invade.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] sulgoth@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Actual rats, Alberta works hard to keep them out and have done a pretty good job so I hear. So yes if Alberta defects they won’t even have that point of pride anymore.

Bootlickers don't understand that they hate the bootlickers as much as the non-bootlickers

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago

Trump is excited about having free Albertan slaves.

[–] RadiallyAxiomatic@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Ah, not to worry. I predict the current referendum vote is to go 40% / 30% / 30% for 'No further referendum' / 'Referendum to go' / 'referendum to stay' respectively, which our premier will say 'Oh, looks like 60% of folks want some form of further referendum', so they can drag this out for another few years while we all grow even more furious about it. Then they'll have another referendum and then finally find out that the majority of people would actually rather stay in Canada, or, more likely, further manoeuvring to keep the whole thing dragging out for all time - more time for the UPC to use our own money to feed us lies and propaganda.

It seems like the perfect issue to keep us all angry and give her leverage to get gifts and hall passes from the feds. I think the main threats to her are the separatists inside her party ousting her, or another provincial conservative party popping up to split the vote. I don't think either are putting her at significant risk though.

I will continue to hope otherwise.

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

Yah all polls regarding Alberta separatistm almost alway come out as 75% to outright stay in Canada, whatever tactics they're using to try and minipulate people aren't working, especially since America has become such and obvious dumpster fire.

[–] Windex007@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Considering the ballot questions are public and binary (yes/no), I'd be pretty fucking shocked to see a result that included the completely fictitious 3-way option you describe.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Let me guess. Lot of redneck cousin fuckers in Alberta?

[–] AHemlocksLie@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I've heard it described as the Texas of Canada, so... Texas may not be know for cousin fucking, but we sure as shit have dipshit rednecks coming out of our ears.

[–] Horsey@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I’d go as far as to say it’s the Alabama of Canada.

Are the Albertans that fucking stupid? There should be an exchange between Canada and the USA. The fucknut Albertans can move to any US Red Oblast and the Blue voters from the same US Red Oblasts can move to Alberta.

[–] the_armchair_potato@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Albertans? It's a small group of morons. Don't paint the whole province with your ignorance.

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

It's thirty percent favoring secession in the last poll I saw, and Canada has terrible voter turnout. It could easily pass.

I'm not sure what percentage favor annexation by the US, I know Smith or Poilievre would jump at the chance to be Governor of Canada, but the conservative parties seem to split pretty hard on that.

There could plausibly be a majority of voters to start trying to secede, but not to go for annexation by the US. But if they do secede, they'll just get annexed, it's not up to the voters at that point.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Alberta cannot be allowed to do this
