What BIG News! Let's ELIMINATE all our EV Models!
-American Car Companies!
Overview:
Electric Vehicles are a key part of our tomorrow and how we get there. If we can get all the fossil fuel vehicles off our roads, out of our seas and out of our skies, we'll have a much better environment. This community is where we discuss the various different vehicles and news stories regarding electric transportation.

Hey, the Germans did it too
Please be aware this doesn't mean 51% of cars are "plug-in" or EVs. The 49% number only refers to gasoline cars without hybrid/diesel/EVs/other.

Damn I hate the sensationalist headlines. Thank you for highlighting.
This headline made it sound as if we crossed milestone where 51% of cars sold are now hybrid/EVs, but what it did is just split off diesel into separate category.
Looking at your chart, it seems the split between fossil powered and energy-efficient cars is actually 65/35, which is good but not nearly as groundbreaking.
I'm surprised the gasoline share is as high as it is, but I guess that depends on market. Here in Europe, diesel is still king as far as I know, gasoline should actually be losing to electric before diesel does since gasoline is better than diesel mostly for short trips and EVs are the absolute best for short trips.
The use of diesel in the EU is in decline since ~2019, while the usage of gasoline is currently rising. But in the EU, we're using more than twice as much diesel as gasoline.

Edit: source as PDF
Europe is just a relatively small market compared to China/Asia, and North America anyway.
only gas cars a hybrid is a "gas car"
This also splits off diesels so "gas car" doesn't even include all non/hybrid ICE cars lol
Trumo really does care about the environment after all! Hike gas prices so high, everyone buys EVs!
I'm loving it because it's pushing used ICE prices down -> I can upgrade soon and all the new EV sales means that thanks to EVs already extreme depreciation, I can get a nice 2026 EV for 80% off in 8 years.
80% off seems pretty in line with even ICE vehicles today.
8 years is a lot of $ on gas. We just went from $600 a month in gas to $50 in electricity. So I'll be laughing all the way to the bank with those savings.
Well most of us don't drive 5 hours a day. At the average person's annual mileage, getting an 60k EV to replace a 2k ICE pays off in about 15-20 years in fuel costs, which is why I'd never buy one new.
China has bought more EVs than US has bought cars, too.
"But we don't have the infrastructure" stop repeating oil industry propaganda, I even hear this from people I know.
You have never driven beyond the distance I cycle to work. What fucking infrastructure do you need? You have electrical sockets at home. Sling an extension lead out the window.
Oh well, keep being angry about petrol prices and doing absolutely nothing about it I guess. It actually doesn't effect me in any way because I just don't buy fossil fuels.
here in Australia, i charge my BYD from a socket in the wall near the car, from the solar on my roof 80% of the time, another 15% is destination charging, I live in a small rural village, occasionally drive into the small nearby city for chores and a bigger grocery shop; plug in, go buy groceries, come out , unplug, drive home. 5% stall chargers on road trips. for the rest. I also charge my ebike off the solar panels. Making your own fuel at home from the sun is awesome.
In 10 years or less, we will start hear about range anxiety for GAS cars.
gas stations are closing in Norway and Netherlands for example
Seeing as this is about global sales, the infrastructure argument still applies and will apply for the foreseeable future even if you live somewhere where driving and consumption patterns fit EVs perfectly.
Do you not have electricity at home?
My post was also anecdotal examples of multiple people I know who have refused to get EVs despite having the option to.
The pattern here is that most people can only afford one car, and needing to drive 350+ km between towns is not a daily necessity but still a common occurrence, otherwise you get stranded between towns in life threatening temperatures. Please explain how having power at home fixes that without charging stations in-between.
350km between towns? Most people don't live in the middle of the outback. Obviously if you do then a plug in hybrid and endurance fuel tank might make more sense.
Cool, continue to dismiss other people's circumstances. It makes for a very convincing argument.
I don't even live in Australia so said conditions might be more common than you think.
I shall, because you clearly are not reading my initial point correctly.
Truly delightful news
