Young men put Trump back in power. Not the boomers

[–] Thor_Whale@lemmus.org 1 points 9 hours ago

Or anybody who signs up to point a gun and shoot at someone else over fucking black goo in the ground is a dipshit in my mind. Let the boomers go shoot it out. They're just as dumb as their parents.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Ok, but have you discussed this with your entire generation? You can't do this alone.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I wonder what % of Republican boomers that support the war in Iran also refused, in one way or another, to fight in Vietnam.

Would be an interesting stat to see.

That was a pretty common evolution they went through. My mom was a free love hippie that is now basically a Nazi. She can't understand why I cut her out of my life.

[–] sexy_peach@feddit.org 3 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Same for my mom. Always a people loving hippie and into crystals and alternative healing, but during covid she discovered telegram and now she votes for the far right and believes in qanon or whatever the latest stuff is.

It's honestly fucking tragic.

But it has taught me that my dad cared more about the aesthetics of the hippie culture, but never actually stood for any real ideology. Just shallow bullshit like music and fashion. And acid.

I suspect this is probably the case for a lot of ex-hippies.

Real fucking shame.

And don't get me wrong, the music was fucking awesome. I just wish there was more substance.

Interestingly, this made me think of George Harrison talking about visiting San Francisco in, I think 1967. He was struck by how vapid it all was.

However, he turned to spirituality instead of rationality.

Hippie » alternative medicine » anti-vaxxer » Russian propaganda consumer » nazi

The hippie to fascist pipeline is real. Their tendency to distrust the establishment means they also fall for typical fascists tactics like putting the blame on the establishment and a secret cabal in power for all their problems. Like in my country during Covid lockdowns these so called “spiritual” people voted for the blatantly fascist party.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

As I said in another comment, it taught me that my father apparently only cared about the aesthetics of being a hippie, but there was never any deeper political ideology or understanding underpinning it.

I imagine this was the case for a lot of ex-hippies.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Also lots of people became hippies purely to rebel against their parents. Bet many dads back then had untreated war trauma and thus were quite unbearable parents.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That sounds plausible, but I don't think that's the case for my mom. I think she was just going with the trend, trying to be in the "in group". I can say with 100% certainty a big part of her Nazi transition is the lack of empathy that she has.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 hours ago

Turns out a lot of hippies were just there for the vibes. They just wanted to get stoned and listen to good music.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

It doesn't fit your idea of a hippie or even my idea of a hippie, but there it was.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I really don't understand how that shift is actually possible.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

They were going with the flow.

My boomer mom from Germany would do the same

How much do you trust European countries to be better?

[–] Jiral@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

There are differences, actually from country to country. Austria for example pioneered the whole thing (at least in Europe) when, what is nowadays conservative mainstream, was in the international media reported as "nazi country doing nazi things". Those stories stopped at some point or had gotten so hypocritical that they approached satire level. Not because those things aren't "nazi" btw, but because they became popular in most Western countries.

Austria has been through at least 3 right populist cycles already, starting in the 1980s. Cycles, because unless the populist right manages to degrade democracy enough, they always blow themselves up due to their boundless corruption.Their voters remember for a few years (except for the hardened Nazi core) and then suffer from mass dementia and go back to those very same people who messed up the last time.

In short, Europe is just one stepb behind the US. The fascist traitors dressing up as patriots do encounter setbacks once in a while though, see Hungary.

blowing up the world's energy infrastructure is an American problem.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

Sure in the way it’s an everyone problem.

No the final fuck your is when they leave whatever money they have left to their goddamn church.

[–] ironhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 hours ago

My parents unironically asked for input about this exact plan. I asked if they actually wanted to disown their children, or if they were just stupid.

[–] mofongo@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 day ago

Two words: reverse mortgage.
