"Faith Foster. Feldspar Fourier. Flan Freeman. Florence Florencia. The four of you boarded boat 15. From this day forward, you will work together, as Team FFFF (forest), lead by Faith Foster."

Everyone clapped. The four new students walked across the stage, celebrating their introduction and initiation, waving to the cheering crowd as they joined the ranks of the students of Haven Academy.

Haru also clapped, not out of joy or celebration though. Her body operated on peer pressured bandwagon instinct; meanwhile her mind was somewhere else.

"... and Yusha Bestial, who is recovering in the hospital."

She nearly flinched when the name was called. Her eyes scanned the screens around the stage, showing the names of who's been called; herself, along with three others, including Yusha. Haru marched forward, taking a deep breath and trying hard to appear strong as she crossed the stage with the other two Faunus she recognized from the initiation, the ones who boarded the boat with her: Perry and J'atoh. They greeted her, one with a polite nod and the other with an over-enthusiastic slap on the back. Perry wore a teal trench coat and trousers with lots of pockets, a brown fedora, and an orange-esque vest. Meanwhile, J'atoh wore a white long coat over a black button down and slacks, with a vivid red cravat and matching red fingerless gloves. Together they approached Headmaster Lionheart to receive their team name.

"The four of you boarded boat 9. From this day forward, you will work together as Team HYJR (hydrangea), lead by Haru Goro."

Haru starred, dumbfounded at the appointment. She barely registered the other two celebrating and moving on without her. "But I..." Headmaster Lionheart cocked his head in confusion. Haru stopped herself, suddenly remembering the crowd. A few cheered and clapped. Some booed. Most were silent. She looked at the screen again; four Faunus, all in the same team, all anomalies at Haven and in Mistral. Haru pulled her hat down to cover her eyes, scurrying off stage and barely keeping herself together. The headmaster called up the next four names.

J'atoh and Perry were waiting for her off stage. "Heeyyyy, congrats leader!" J'atoh said, moving forward to greet her.

"I shouldn't be your leader," Haru replied, ignoring J'atoh's outstretched hand and brushing past. "This was a mistake, I'm going to talk to someone about this."

"Whoa whoa whoa, calm down, yeah?" J'atoh grabbed her arm and pulled her back. "What are ya talking about?"

"It's a mistake. It has to be!" Haru finally snapped. A dam broke inside her, the words pouring out. "It was my fault she got hurt and ended up like that! Not to mention, I barely even did anything the entire time! I was useless, and because of me, Yusha-" The name choked in her throat. "She's in the hospital now. I should have been better, I don't deserve to be leader!" Tears stung at her eyes.

Perry shook their head. They grasped Haru on the shoulders and knelt down. "We don't choose our fates," they said gruffly. "You did what you could."

"Yeah, listen to the big dude. Trust, I was pretty useless too, that initiation was no joke!"

Another team walked past chatting about how easy the initation was.

"That initiation was no joke!" J'atoh repeated, louder.

"That doesn't change anything!" Haru wiped her face with her arm. "Because of me, someone was hurt, and now I'm supposed to be responsible for their life going forward? That doesn't make any sense."

J'atoh sighed and shook their head. They shoved Perry away and gave Haru a hug. Haru yelped in surprise, but J'atoh didn't let go. "You're ok. Look, let's find our dorms, get set up for now, and then later this evening we can visit Yusha in the hospital, 'kay? I'm sure she's doing fine."

Haru hesitated. Eventually, she acquiesced and returned the hug. "Ok," she whispered back, wiping the tears off her face again. "Let's go."

***

J'atoh was the first inside the new dorms. They spun around as they walked in, taking in the common area. A fine, oval shaped plush rug sat in the middle of the hardwood floor; on top, a low table and several pillows for seating. A large recessed window took up most of the back wall, the dying sunlight pouring in and bathing the room in warmth. Outside it, the view was nothing special, just Haven academy, which rather disappointed Haru. She was hoping for a good view over the mountains, or maybe over Mistral itself. A bench sat below it. On either wall were two doors, leading to the private rooms for each student. J'atoh picked the far left one, running straight in. Perry picked the other left one, while Haru chose the room closest to the entrance on the right.

The rooms themselves were rather plain; a smaller window on the far wall, a desk with a chair, and a four post bed with accompanying dresser. Large enough to live in, maybe to add some new furniture too. Haru briefly wondered if the other two were decorating their rooms or unpacking their stuff. For her part, Haru just flopped onto the surprisingly soft bed and tried to clear her mind. Yusha, the responsibilities of a leader, her failure at initiation... Everything in past, present, and future was swirling around in her mind in a slurry of self-deprecating depression. Haven was turning out nothing like she thought it would. For a brief moment, Haru wondered if she even belonged. She would probably fail her team if she stayed. It was only a matter of time until someone got hurt again on a mission, under her watch, following her orders. She-

There was a knock at the door. Haru lifted her head from the pillow and mumbled something. J'atoh swung the door open, took one look at Haru, and burst out laughing. Haru mumbled again.

"Passed the fuck out, eh? And I thought I was the sleepy head. Come on, we're heading to the hospital. Also wipe the drool off your face."

Haru suddenly flushed with embarrasement. She wiped the drool off and got up, joining J'atoh to the hospital. The sunlight had mostly died; whatever dribbles of it were left shone weakly through the commons window. Once inside the hospital, they found Yusha's room. She wore a simple hospital gown and was tied up to a machine that seemed to monitor her vitals, including her aura levels. Haru stared at the machine for a while, while J'atoh went to use the bathroom. Eventually, Haru moved to the side of the bed and sat down, studying Yusha's face. Yusha was grimacing, though no sounds escaped her mouth. Haru hesitated for a moment, then gave in and held Yusha's hand.

Haru heard the curtain rustling open. She looked up to see a nurse. A very scantily-clad nurse. A very J'atoh looking scantily clad nurse.

"J'atoh, what the fuck?" Haru asked, utterly flabbergasted.

"What? What'd I do?" they asked in reply, genuine confusion on their face.

"Why... why are you wearing a sexy nurses outfit?"

J'atoh leaned forward over the bed, getting close to Haru. "Oh, you think it's sexy?"

"That's not... No, what! the fuck is happening?"

J'atoh chortled, flopping back on a seat. "As they say, when in Rome, etc etc."

"The fuck is Rome?"

J'atoh just shrugged, pulling out a book from seemingly nowhere and reading it. Haru chose to ignore it. She held on to Yusha, wondering if she would forgive her for her mistakes, hoping she gets better soon. At the very least, Yusha's face seems to have relaxed somewhat.

"So like, are you two a couple or something?" J'atoh asked, eyebrow raised.

Haru immediately blushed and let go. "No! I just... it's my fault she's like this, and as leader this is the only thing I can do." Haru looked down at Yusha, worry spilling over her face. J'atoh didn't reply, and the two lapsed into a long silence.

"Oh, where's Perry?" Haru asked, realizing the other member of their team wasn't there.

"Hmm? Oh, they said they were going to go scout out the campus and figure out the route we need to take for classes."

"Right, those are starting soon."

They lapsed into silence yet again. After another long while, Haru drifted off to sleep.

***

“Your eyes are slightly different colors."

Haru was taken aback. A strange warmth spread through her; she felt her cheeks flushing. "They are..." she replied, unsure what else to say. She's had heterchromatia all her life, but the colors were similar enough almost no one had ever noticed. Well, that, and not many people really paid attention to her eyes. She tuned back into the conversation just as Yusha was questioning whether J'atoh was actually a nurse or not, which they weren't but for some reason decided to dress in a hot nurse costume. She wondered if she should say something to them about it as leader as she explained who they were.

As soon as Yusha realized they had passed the initation, she immediately tried to shoot up. Haru watched the expression on her face almost immediately change to pain, then back to non-chalantness. She talked as though she wasn't hurt or the pain was nothing, but Haru could see the pain she was hiding underneath. Then, her reply to the two of them telling her what happened left her concerned. What did she mean not fee like just a stab? As the nurse escorted Haru and J'atoh out, she kept mulling that comment over. Had she been stabbed like that before?

The thoughts slipped away from her as J'atoh elbowed Haru in the side. "She'll be fine. Come on, we should get back to the dorms."

"Oh, right," Haru said. "What time is it anyways?"

J'atoh checked an imaginary watch they definitely didn't have. "Like 5 AM."

Haru jolted, immediately awake. "What the fuck?! Class starts in like an hour!"

"Eh, it's the first day, they're probably going over the syllabus and stuff."

Haru ignored them, instead sprinting straight down the hall, gunning it for the exit, J'atoh hot on her trail and yelling something about not running in the halls of a hospital.

Kek, lampooning the team naming scheme right out the gate, are we? :P

I am unsure if starting the second paragraph with the simple sentence “Everyone clapped” was meant to sound somewhat sarcastic, but it does come across a bit like that when the chapter opens with a silly FFFF team name.

Another small nitpick: I would assume Yusha was put in the school’s infirmary rather than an off-site hospital wouldn’t she?

I dislike the term “orange-esque”. It’s outside of dialogue, so you can be more specific/descriptive to better communicate with your reader -- terms like tawny, ochre, rusty; different fruit or vegetables like apricot, carrot, mango; various adjectives like burnt orange, flaming orange, tiger orange, et cetera.

( ˃⌓˂) “White long coat” stands out as disobeying the rules of adjective order in English. There are exceptions made for compound words, but I wouldn’t think “long coat” to be one of them.

I’m uncertain how to feel about playing up the supposed racism in Mistral, because while we’re told it’s supposed to be bad, all we’re shown in canon is one sign at a bar -- meanwhile, one of the most influential men in the world (given he’s part of the yellow brick bunch), is an openly faunus man sitting as the headmaster of one of the four major Grimm hunter schools (which besides being of import to keep humanity from extinction, as I’ve mentioned before stands to reason as being places which would accept some of the craziest and weirdest of society because what normal person is going to sign up to a job to fight against the unceasing hordes of hell?).

J’atoh chortled, flopping back on a seat. “As they say, when in Rome, etc etc.”

“The fuck is Rome?”

I don’t particularly like little lampshades like this in otherwise serious stories, but I can’t help but think of Yang’s Eternal Hotness (which I’m technically in the middle of reading), which had Neo talk in constant real-world references which nobody understood.

They lapsed into silence yet again. After another long while, Haru drifted off to sleep.

Huh? Just… right there in the hospital bed? That feels a little forced, with how little it’s described -- no continued exhaustion, not even mentioning she laid down (she was, at this point, sitting on the edge of the bed), just boom! asleep. Next scene! The transition could use a little work.

====

Haru starred, dumbfounded at the appointment.

Should be “stared”

What did she mean not fee like just a stab?

Uh… huh? I’m not sure if this is a typo or a turn of phrase I’m not familiar with or I’m just supposed to be confused here.

====

I'm a bit slow on the uptake, is the last section here supposed to be like, Haru and J'atoh's side of the interaction from last chapter? If that's the case that re-sets when I was imagining this whole chapter taking place. I figured this was all like a day after the previous chapter.

[–] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Re: Everyone clapped. Eh, sounding sarcastic is fine by me, I don't have any particular intentions with it.

Re: Infirmary. I suppose so! I'll have to change that.

Re: Orange esque. I have no idea what i was cooking with that. You're entirely right here.

Re: White long coat. Hm, I could see it breaking the adjective order but it still reads fine to me cuz "long coat" feels like one word to me. Hmmmm. White long coat vs long white coat. I'll have to sit on that one.

Re: racism in mistral. I'm pretty sure in After the Fall, it's revealed that Team CVFY explicitly chose to go to Vacuo instead of Mistral because of the racism part. Also, according to Haven Academy wiki page (of dubious authority though), Leonardo was put in Mistral by Ozpin to curb faunus racism. Also, Leo's a faunus?! I had no idea, I genuinely thought he was a human. Either way I like the idea of playing up the racism in both Haven and Mistral as a whole, since it opens plot points and I have plans in that direction. Also because I'm an egoist and think I can handle racism better than the RWBY authors.

Re: lampshades. I would say I never promised a serious story, but internally I think that's just deflection on any flaws and tone breaks, because in fairness I have pretty much been writing a serious story. That said, I'm going to tap the sign anyways because fuck it. Anyway J'atoh is fundamentally an unserious character and basically an author self insert.

Re: Haru falling asleep. Well, I mean, she does in fact fall asleep right there. She woke up resting her head on Yusha in Yusha's perspective, this is just how it happened. In any regard, there was nothing else for them to really discuss.

Re: stab. Typo, thanks for catching.

Re: last paragraph. Yep! This is in fact Haru and J'atoh's perspective of the same interaction from last chapter. I'm playing with the idea of perspectives limiting information the reader would have, though I don't think it panned out good here. How do you think I could make the scene more clear that it's the same one from previously?

[–] Unique_Emerald_Sol_I@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that bit in After The Fall. What I do know is that the writers really had this idea in their heads that Mistral was super racist, but either forgot to communicate that to the animators (not unlikely) or didn't think about communicating that to the viewers (quite likely), possibly both. I've heard bits and pieces of the V5 commentary track that cement as much, but I subscribe to a death of the author mindset rather than taking word of god on matters like this, and we are shown less racism in Mistral than in Atlas or even Vale. (I'm also like 70% sure that line in the wiki is fanon, unless it was said in the V5 commentary and I haven't actually listened to the whole thing to know)

And like, I'm not going to poo-poo the idea out of hand, but it does bring up a note of dissonance every time by having to remind myself how this setting differs from all the canon info I've crammed into my noggin. It's also something I try to keep a little more vigilant in analyzing because a lot of RWBY fans don't catch just how (unintentionally, I believe) racist RWBY as a series is -- the show where the heroes regularly beat up a social justice movement equatable to BLM, a major villain is a Fox-News-style reverse-racist who wants to install faunus supremacy, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. So-called ego aside, it's hard to do worse than RWBY at writing the faunus, but a lot of fans don't have the experience or are acquainted enough with the real-world history enough to portray the faunus well so it's worth keeping in mind and calling it out if it starts toddling in the wrong direction.

Also did you seriously forget Leo has a lion's tail?

====

Re: Rome, etc. -- I get that, and I get that this isn't supposed to be some angsty drama, it's just kinda a personal taste thing, you know? Like how some people will despise certain character types in anime (like the one gag character in a roster (e.g. Mineta in HeroAca) or the ultra-saccharine little sister types with the high voices). Having a the one character who taps on the fourth wall is kind of an honored tradtion, though they're usually a villain or at least minor antagonist (e.g. Q from Star Trek).

====

Re: the chronology -- I'd probably have to re-read these two chapters again to get a better idea in my mind, part of the problem is I'm not terribly good at keeping overarching details in my mind, especially with as long as I'm taking in-between reading chapters (not helped by the long work days that have been forcing my reading pace). Using third-person limited is a fine idea used in a lot of good stories, and I do believe you have a grasp on character voice considering how the Yusha chapters have sounded, so that's not too much of an issue. I'll try to get back to you on that as I have a few more days off coming up here (will have to work the next weekend tho).

[–] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Re: The racism bit. Yeah that's fair. I very much appreciate a second set of eyes on the matter and if I do toddle in the wrong direction, absolutely call me out. Also, I don't think I ever even noticed the lions tail. Leo is such a relatively minor character imo, and was just so human-coded to me, I guess it just never registered. About V5, I mean I could also see them specifically avoiding racism in Mistral because a central plot point is Blake and the White Fang/Faunus in Menagerie, where she rallies them against Adam's ideology and brings a ton of support against the violent White Fang. The people of Menagerie essentially save Haven Academy (not really but that was supposed to be the point), so playing up racism in Mistral and Haven probably could have been very counter-productive to the story they were trying to tell. Personally I think they should have done it anyways; it would have solidified the decision the Faunus made, which was to fight for peace and equality rather than fight violence with more violence, despite the racism and hatred against them. Sort of a "be the better person" sort of idea? Idk, either way it would have made for a more nuanced and interesting plot. Regardless, all the lore outside of RWBY show itself seems to point towards Mistral and Atlas being pretty racist places, but like you said we're not actually shown it. Well, we are in Atlas but not in Mistral.

Re: the white fang and BLM. I would argue the original spirit of the white fang in lore was more like BLM or the civil rights movement. Blake's backstory says as much, with more peaceful protests until a change in leadership led took over and started more violent movements. After the leadership change, I think they're supposed to reflect the Black Panthers and freedom fighters in general, which turns more extremist due to Adam's influence. From a literary perspective though, the white fang serve a sort of generic bad guy group the audience can point at and know they're bad and the protags are good because they fight against them. Which is stupid, because there already is a generic bad guy group called the Grimm and Salem's posse.

Anyways the idea that people shouldn't respond to violence against them with violence, but rather respond with peace and diplomacy, is a persistent theme in lots of fiction. There's probably a trope for it, and maybe even a trope for the take where a wronged peoples turns towards extremism. Scar from FMA/FMAB, Magneto and his group in some Marvel universes, and Adam and the White Fang all share nuggets of this concept. The idea of a once peaceful group turning towards violence and in Adam's case, towards extremism isn't necessarily a bad idea and I can see the inspirations for it, even if the authors can't, since it leads into "cycles of violence/hatred" tropes that are very common and usually compelling if done right. The problem isn't the concept, it's the execution, which is done incredibly poorly and in bad taste. RWBY never actually addresses the systemic, social, and latent cultural racism against Faunus. Instead, and I mentioned this earlier, they just use the white fang as generic bad guys with no nuance or substance, just, "hey they're evil, go kill them and beat them up and stuff because you're good and they're bad." They amount to little more than generic terrorists with a spicy twist. Hell, the only reason Blake was able to motivate the people of Menagerie to action against the white fang and towards saving Haven academy is because the white fang attacked Blake's father / their leader. That one win was tantamount in the narrative to defeating racism as a whole in Mistral. Like, "oh the faunus aren't that bad because they stopped other faunus from blowing up our local university". This actually happens a lot in fictions as well, where a bad guy with a good point is exaggerated or does stupid plain evil things solely to deflect audiences from realizing that the bad guy actually has a point and might be in the right here and thus sympathizing with them or seeing the protag as evil or bad or even just less good. As much as I love Christopher Nolan's Batman, Bane is an excellent example of this, and so is Adam. I would argue the White Fang have a point and imo are justified in violent action. They've been scuffed for a long time and made little progress through peaceful protests, and as much as people love to say violence is never the answer, well... *gestures vaguely at history*. The french revolution, the american revolution, the civil war, Luigi Mangione, hell some historians believe the civil rights movement wouldn't have worked without the Black Panthers also existing as the alternative to peaceful protests. Sometimes the threat of violence or violence itself is in fact, necessary for actionable change. Except, again, RWBY doesn't address that. They don't address anything with faunus, it's a superficial analogy of real life racism and discrimination against black people and they don't even have actual black people in the story. At least, not until Flint Coal, and he's basically a token. JK Rowling ass name, fuck. The authors of RWBY have absolutely no idea how to handle racism and related themes in a meaningful way and probably weren't even really thinking about it until volume 5 and even then they just have the one and done plot point with Haven academy and then a handful of "hey everyone remember humans don't like faunus?" and "don't do racism, its bad!" moments in future volumes. Hell, do the White Fang even show up after V5? I'm pretty sure it's just Adam at that point and there's no mention of them, but you're more familiar with the lore than I am.

Ahem.

Re: everything else. Take your time reading! I get being busy and you just reading it at all is always appreciated. And that's fair about the character thing lol.

[–] Unique_Emerald_Sol_I@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

the other two Faunus she recognized from the initiation, the ones who boarded the boat with her

After giving the prior chapter a re-read and coming back to this one, I pinpointed a line here that implies more time has passed than you probably want. That Haru “recognized [them] from the initiation” implies that they’ve had some time apart, when the intent was probably that Yusha got taken away while these three went back to Haven proper, probably together since the entire student body was broken up into groups of four by the initiation itself. Even if not, changing it to imply less time has passed (something like “the other two Faunus she met mere hours ago when they all boarded the boat during initiation”) might help create a better sense of time for the reader.

Also, in re-reading it I noticed here it’s “Faunus” while in previous chapters it’s been “Faunis”, so some inconsistency there.

Also I managed to catch another typo:

showing the names of who’s been called;

Should be “who’d been called”

[–] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Re: Time frame. Hm that makes sense. I think I envisioned in my head that everyone who passed the initiation was taken back together in a big group, and that the commotion with Yusha getting stabbed separated everyone long enough that it made sense.

Re: Faunus. I think officially they're called Faunus, and I've mixed it up in previous chapters. I'm trying to correct for it tho, thanks for calling it out.

Funny, I always read Leo as faunus-coded the same way anime add little character design details to their beastfolk/monster girls -- his big hair and color scheme just screams “lion character” to me even without the tail and I didn’t even need the wiki to understand he was based off the Cowardly Lion.

The authors of RWBY have absolutely no idea how to handle racism and related themes in a meaningful way

Not to brush the whole talk aside but that is exactly it -- they came out and said as much in interviews/BTS stuff. As a fellow Texan I fully recognize that they were a bunch of middle-class white dude(bro)s from Austin, Texas (and to be frank I tend to include Monty when I say that); the reason I give them the benefit of the doubt is because I know the environment down here and it’s obvious they’re first time writers being given the BIGGEST fanfic project ever. At some point they did actually realize they were in WAY over their heads with the topic, though, so they wrote a kind-of finale for the White Fang. That’s why Blake’s half of V5 is written that way.

Now, I’ve watched a fair few videos about V4/5 and the White Fang and picked up a few things, some of which is hearsay and some is backed up by the BTS stuff that might be sourced on the wiki. So say the writers, the WF were supposed to be based off the IRA (Irish Republican Army) -- the one famous for the car bombings &c. -- which I cannot speak to whether that choice is sensitive or not, but as USAmericans they definitely had more familiarity with movements like BLM and organizations like the Black Panther Party. Many people have pointed out the similarities the WF bears to media depictions of the Black Panthers, and my guess is that they fell back on school knowledge of the Black Panthers even if they were thinking about the IRA at the time.

Now, I can’t remember my source for this (may have been some of the stuff Sheena has been posting) but I remember seeing that Monty’s original idea was for an actual mafia/yakuza group to be a recurring antagonistic force, and that’s what the WF were grown out of. Monty was a huge FF7/8/9 fan, too, so they probably rolled the eco-terrorists that Cloud was part of into the idea as they were workshopping it, combined it with the obvious beastfolk-fighting-for-independance angle, and stumbled out of the kitchen with unbaked batter.

I would argue the White Fang have a point and imo are justified in violent action.

TBQH, yeah. It’s not like I’m one of those Adam stans that try to say he did nothing wrong, but Blake herself says in her V1 exposition scene that the peaceful protests were getting them scraps and it wasn’t until the WF turned violent that they started being treated as equals. The whole “but we weren’t doing it the right way” is a bit of a tone-deaf, imperialistic point of view that too few people pick up on. If Adam was the one who changed the WF to that bent then he’d probably be like a Napoleonic figure, whom I believe (tho my French history is tenuous at best) was a key figure in the French Revolution overthrowing the monarchy before rising to power himself.

Actually I wanna go on a little Adam tangent, especially since you mention him at the end there. Adam basically has three distinct depictions: we have the first iteration from the Black Trailer through V2 (maybe mid-V3) where he was a mentor figure that Blake had a crush on but who was focused on the WF; then we have the creepy stalker version from V3 thru to V5 (starts with his fedora-tipping “my love” in the V3 climax); finally after the WF plotline gets resolved they needed a way to get rid of Adam so they made him into a full psycho ex to justify killing him off in V6. There’s evidence to suggest that Arryn Zech (Blake’s VA) had a hand in his transformation because of a very bad breakup she had -- either that or the much more detestable option that Miles & Kerry used her personal drama as inspiration for RWBY, but Arryn has seemingly always been very vocal inside the crew and was pushing for Blake shipping as early as V1 (evidence suggests she was into Blake/Pyrrha ship, rhymes with “mussy pagnet”, before shifting to Bumbleby). Adam was actually supposed to have some ties to Raven -- and that I’m not just pulling from my ass -- and was likely slated to be the second-in-command to her mafia boss status before just everything that happened with V3.

QUICKEDIT: wow, I thought this would be a short post but that ballooned out quickly lol. Sorry if it's a little much <3

[–] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Hey! Sorry, just getting back to this.

Re: The writers, volume 4/5. I didn't know any of that! That's pretty cool. Biggest fanfic project ever is a very apt description of the series lol. I've started FF7 but never got too deep, from what I've seen though, isn't Avalanche the good guys? I wonder why Monty would want to have a group inspired by them to be an antagonistic force. They could have just had a mafia if they wanted a mafia. Seems to be what mr. Clockwork Orange was supposed to do (Roman Torchwick). I'm also not familiar with the IRA. Since we're doxing ourselves, my Floridian education was very, very limited. Though, it makes sense what you said about them thinking about the BP. Authors write what they know, even if they're not thinking about it.

Re: Adam. Hey, my French history is even worse than yours. What you said about him becoming a really important figure makes sense though, and I think there was echoes of that in the series with Adam having huge sway over the WF at some point if I'm not mistaken. I know he kills the current leader and her guards helped with the coup. I really hope it was that Arryn was pushing the plot point instead of Miles and Kerry drawing inspiration from her breakup; I've been on the receiving end of that before and it's not very nice. Adam having ties to Raven makes sense, though, considering the masks.

Re: mussy pagnet. Holy fuck that is genius, despite the connotations.

Re: quickedit. All good, sorry it took me so long to get back.

[–] Unique_Emerald_Sol_I@sh.itjust.works 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Well, firstly I want to say don't feel like you have to reveal your location just because I'm doing it. I'm actually quite a bit safer because the state of Texas is larger than many countries. Like nearly twice the size of Germany big.

I point to Avalanche because I have zero familiarity with FF8 or 9, and 8 was Monty's favorite game like, ever (of all time). Apparently he stole a lot of that game's look wholesale for RWBY (like having gunblades is apparently ripped directly out of FF8), so it might stand to reason that some antagonistic force in that game influenced the WF, but I certainly wouldn't know.

And you're all good. I'll probably go back to checking in once a day or two until my next weekend. Got another 9 work days ahead of me.

[–] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Lol it's ok, the doxxing comment was a joke. I don't really care if people know what state I live in.

Got another 9 work days ahead of me.

Gat damn, that is rough (´-ω-`) good luck! hope it isn't too bad.
