Close, amiibo started with 3DS/Wii U (and they can still be read by switch 1 and 2 joy cons).
There had been other NFC readers for games before, they were just not integrated into controllers as far as I know.
I think you mean the Wii U, but not that big of a mistake, since the Wii U only was a DLC for the Wii. /s
Wow, Sony’s innovations include rootkits on music CDs you purchased, taking away your ownership of your games, and turning your entertainment devices into PoS kiosks for Sony Group Corporation.
They’re always looking for new and exciting ways to say “fuck you” to their users.
It really illustrates how far gone this regulatory regime is — that it’s even possible for a company to stay profitable while displaying such unending contempt for their customers.

Sony and MS are moving gaming community to Steam the fastest. Like they don't even want our money or something.
This makes me worry about anything happening to Steam. I started buying DRM free on GoG a while back and have an extra PC setup that, among other things, syncs games down from GoG so if something happens, I don't lose my games. If
Steam gets bought out or goes under or whatever else, we'll be screwed.

Like, reading a chip from a controller to make stuff happen in a game? That's basically what was called toys-to-life games. Skylanders, Lego Dimensions, Disney Infinity, and for whoever remembers that, Ubisoft's Starlink.
They're almost all dead and only Nintendo's amiibo kind of survive.
The last thing I want to do while playing a game is look away from the screen and start acknowledging the controller. The whole point is immersion for me. Don’t remind me I have to deal with this pesky corporeal form.
We shouldn't be focusing on who should have the legal rights to hoard technology, methods of use and knowledge, and punish anyone else for using it, and instead focus on whether this is a stupid utilisation of tech to begin with that no company should be allowed to do.
