In the red trailer, Ruby swaps mags and goes flying at the Grimm. In V1, she shoots down while running up the face of a cliff. I'm sure there's other examples but they slip my mind for now.

The wiki claims she's shooting gravity dust bullets, but I always thought it was just high power ammo or whatever and the recoil is what caused the momentum.

So like, I do enjoy theorycrafting for the sake of fic writing etc., but questions like this really have no answer in canon because early volumes went by rule of cool and a LOT of this stuff didn’t get solidified so you end up with contradictory lore along the line. Also I refer to the wiki a lot but I’ve come across a decent number of instances where they’re clearly headcanoning in explanations because there never were any (a good example being Sage’s listed allusion).

One big reason Dust kinda falls apart when you start trying to think about it too hard is that they can just create matter (the best example of this is when we see earth dust being used), though you could turn that around into a positive by saying e.g. when Yang shoots out bursts of fire that’s not just like gunpowder but an actual explosive decompression of phlogiston that she can ride as it displaces the matter around it.

All that said, personally I’ve always seen Ruby’s gun-fu movement as dictated by the sheer size of Crescent Rose’s sniper rifle. I’ve even seen fanfics that lean into it by saying she uses anti-tank ammunition.

Yeah the anti-tank rifle stuff makes the most sense to me. I would have ruled it as ammo specifically created to produce extreme recoil.

Re: dust. I mean it's literally just magic. RWBY has this weird thing where they call magic by any other name than magic. It's basically magic, literally in some cases. Semblances are either a super power or just straight up magic, dust is just offbrand ATLA magic and even in universe is a magic replacement, and then everyone acts surprised and in awe at the maidens able to do like basic elemental shit. Fucking Raven can literally open whole ass portals ffs. Anyway all this to say yeah dust is basically magic so thinking too hard about it kinda messes everything up. Like thinking too hard about Midas' curse.

I hear you. It's always kind of boggled my mind how many fans seemingly accept what we're told by the characters despite what we've seen them do. Like, I've always taken Semblances to be named Semblance because they bear some semblance to magic. Hell, until V4 when Qrow decided to tell the audience what his lame-ass Semblance was, people literally thought his crow transformation was his Semblance (likely not helped by his appearances in RWBY Chibi), because it's honestly not that far off from what some other Semblances can do.

As far as Dust goes, I've seen some theorycrafting of it being the leftover remnants (heh) of humanity 1.0, back when they had capital-M Magic in Salem's age, and like that's why it behaves as if it's magic.

Doesn't Qrow canonically think his Crow form is a curse more than a gift? Or am I misremembering things. I would argue his actual semblance isn't all that bad of an idea, just hard to display its effects properly without being too subtle or too over the top. The problem with just radiating a bad luck aura is that there's no telling when something is just generic bad luck or circumstance, or actual bad luck. For example, one might consider it bad luck that salem attacked Atlas while he was there, or that Tyrian attacked Ruby while he was watching over her, or that Cordovin's Collosus bot had a giant shield generator on its back conveniently placed where Qrow (and Ren ig) could attack it. Fate based debuffs or buffs like that are hard to actually pin down and write about/show effectively. See Vriska in Homestuck for plenty of luck based shenanigans, both good and bad. I think the authors tend towards the more subtle effects of it, with the best demonstration of it being how when he was fighting Tyrian on the roof top, Tyrian landed on a broken beam and fell. They just don't do that enough.

Re: Dust. Wait like remnants of humanity itself or just the world? Because if dust is just disintegrated humans turned into crystals and powders used to make magic, then that's fucking raw as hell. So metal. Like oil, except it was people, not dinos.

If memory serves me well enough, I think Qrow considers his Semblance a curse. I kinda dove headfirst into fan works tho so I'm not 100% sure if that's canon or a common fanon.

The problem I have with fate magic or whatever you want to call it is that in a non-interactive story it's just plot contrivance, which is already a thing well outside the fate magic when you have to accept the main characters get involved in everything we see, or are all the children of important people, or any of a myriad of other things. In Homestuck it kinda works because a) the comic itself is heavily influenced by and pays homage to video games; and b) half the time Vriska's luck abilities are (over)played for gags. With RWBY trying to be a serious story after V3, all Qrow is left with is plot contrivance to explain a power that they put zero effort into animating and may as well have been nothing. IMO nothing actually would actually change if Qrow had no Semblance instead of "bad luck". (That said, I'm one of the ones who see the bad luck thing as the perfect in-universe explanation for Qrow being Ruby's dad instead of uncle.)

And yeah, like, the crystallized remains of the people that the GoD dusted in the big Jinn flashback of V6.

Re: Qrow. Ah yeah I think that's canon, and now that I think about it I think he doesn't mention anything about his feelings on turning into a crow. Not entirely sure, tbh, I've got it in my head that he also think that's a curse more than a blessing and I don't know how.

Re: fate magic. Fair, fair. Homestuck I would say around act 5 it starts taking itself much more seriously, and Vriska's luck plays a lesser role outside of fight scenes and/or rolling all 8s. The bigger influence on the story is her personality >::::D Everything else I agree with completely. He might as well have no semblance instead of a hamfisted edgy one, I just think it had potential for better usage, but ended up in the hands of RWBY authors.

Re: dust. Metal as fuck, I love it. Violating the crystallized remains of an ancient peoples to harness the fragments of magic left behind is crazy fucking lore.

Maybe you're getting Qrow and Raven's ideas mixed up? Like I said, at this point I'm starting to get canon and fanon mixed up a bit (probably moreso for Raven who has so many redemption fics it's not even funny) so I'm not entirely sure what she said about it tho I am certain that Raven as a whole is a fucking mess (even if I do have a soft spot for what she could have been).

I never ended up finishing Homestuck (lost the time during the gigapause and Flash being discontinued made returning to it a problem) but from what I remember Act 4 is where Hussie stopped taking reader input and started putting the story more on rails, but I'd say it stays irreverent with the quirky humor everywhere. After all, one character had to be taught to use the caps lock key tumut

I honestly don't know either of their opinions on the shapeshifting thing, so it's possible.

Re: Homestuck, the unofficial collection is a really good way to read it with all the original games and cutscenes preserved. It also has Hussie's prior works, including Problem Sleuth, which is very underrated. Good way to finish it, if you've any interest, though the official Homestuck website also has all the flash content through a flash emulator. There was a lot of drama surrounding the website throughout the years but it seems it's settled on returning to it's original form more or less, plus flash emulator. Homestuck is definitely one of my all time favorite series, despite its problems.

Actually that's good to hear; I remember hearing that the website became damn-near unusable after the Viz acquisition (it was Viz, wasn't it?). My litmus test would probably have to be seeing if [S]Cascade still looks as intended -- one of the things I loved about Homestuck was how it pushed artistic boundaries of the medium and I remember [S]Cascade in particular growing in such a way that couldn't be replicated in a simple video format.

Actually, on that note, one day I've got to return to Unsounded. It was a much simpler webcomic (being more traditionally-laid-out comic pages with a less insane story/setting) but also broke out of its pages in such a way that only webcomics can do.

[–] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you ever decide to pick Homestuck back up, please let me know! I may have been understating how much I love Homestuck!

Unsounded looks pretty decent from the few pages I saw of it.

Let me tell you about Homestuck...

Prepare for a new wave of "Vriska did nothing wong" discourse.

Joking aside, I actually never ended up seeing much of the fandom because in talking to the friend who introduced me to it, he specifically said "it would be like walking into a room where everyone is talking about their favorite flavor of Kool-aid while you've yet to discover water". I am kind of hopeful for the upcoming animated series, tho.

[–] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Tbf I never really got involved in the fandom either. I did try, just never stuck it out. I'm not usually one for fandoms in general, I consume the media and talk about it with my friends if they've also seen it and that's about it.
