GrapheneOS is the first thing to give me serious consideration of getting one [despite the remaining issues].
Preinstalled devices, increases chance of a snap purchase.

For now, only Motorola flagships will be sold in 2027 with GrapeheneOS.
and not just any flagship -- it's ultra high priced folding one.

lol, my god, at this point I rather take the fairphone with PMOS, or the pixel with GOS, regardless both are non existent in my local market so I am stuck using Lineage on a old Motorola phone (I did check for PMOS support, and even got it booting but couldn't get the screen to work)

I don't, I have been using Lineage on it instead which has the screen working

It's the Signature 27 I believe. Still expensive, just not a foldable.
Are we sure that's it? I thought we weren't getting a GOS-compatible phone until next year, but the 27 is apparently expected to launch in November.
Fairly certain, haven't seen full confirmation yet but the chipset supports it, along with GOS' confirmation that it isn't a foldable a while back. Unless Motorola has an entirely new SKU for GOS this seems like it.

Good to know. I'll have to keep an eye out then. I gotta admit, I was hoping out hope for a headphone jack and expandable storage, but I knew that was unlikely.

Unfortunate but true. Some of these sites are reporting the Signature 27 as having storage configurations as big as 1 TB - if that gets confirmed, I may just spring for that. I've recently realized just how much better FLAC sounds compared to streaming, but it takes up so much more space. It's either that or I find myself an old discman and start carrying CDs with me everywhere. At least a CD player would have a headphone jack!
It looks like Graphene has confirmed that the 27 is the one, though they haven't put out their official announcement yet. I won't be surprised if that comes out later today or tomorrow.

i'm too clumsy & absent-minded w phones to ever reasonably expect my phones to last beyond 1.5 years and paying $1k+ makes it hard to justify.
and i also hate google too much to ever buy a pixel -- new or used -- so that's a complete non-starter.
i'll probably end up going with lineage instead of graphene because of it.
TBH while I like some of the specs, I don't want to spend $1k on another phone that can't run normal Linux distros (indirectly locking it to Google's enshittification) and lacks expandable storage.

this. Also, safety concerns. Global south. Robberies and larcenies. I can't just have a $800 brick on me all the time. I can barely replace the $150 one when it gets stolen or breaks. Unfortunately I am forced to participate in this smartphone system, and I remember when the most expensive phone was $300. 🤡

If you need security I would recommend that you overcome your predispositions and either get an affordable phone that is supported by graphene (a pixel) or an iphone.
If you do not need security then no worries, but it would be a shame to end up in a bad situation because you felt it was a bridge too far to use a phone from a particular company.
i don't mind using a google phone, i just want to do everything in my power not to help google -- both directly by giving them money for a phone and indirectly by helping keep the resale value high.
the only threat model have come as a result of the us federal government and the local police. even w graphene, i'm hopelessy outclassed by the former and lineage has proven itself is good enough for the latter for less well funded police departments, but it's unclear about bigger ones.
i would prefer graphene, but the only viable way is to do it w a used pixel and they're both more expensive than the $150 brand new phones that i've been using thus far and it's also silly to disregard the extensive history of bad luck i've had with used phones.
You should look closer at fed/police capabilities. Only graphene and ios consistently defeat graykey or cellebrite.
Even small departments have these capabilities or can get them on loan from bigger ones.
If that is truly something you’re worried about you should weigh your exposure to them against how much you want to not help Google (or apple).
Google or Apple won’t notice if you do or don’t buy a phone that’s their brand. You will notice if the police are able to look through your device.
People who put their principles above their own safety can be easily put in situations where they’re in danger.

How would they guarantee the device hasn't been tampered with? Sure you could use Auditor, but still…
you probably can just reflash GOS on it manually, but for hardware or firmware backdoors/tampering, you are out of luck for any device really
No? GOS said they'll support them not that it'll came preinstalled, ehy would Motorola go through the hassle of installing it?
That's been a thing for years
It hasn't been a thing direct from phone manufacturers. It's just been people flashing phones and reselling them.
What's the difference to the consumer?
One obvious difference is that there will be official support for GrapheneOS from a hardware vendor. It also means a lot more people are likely to get these phones because most people aren't going to buy a refurbished one just to get GrapheneOS. So, it moves it closer to the mainstream, and that would make it harder for Google to cut off store access as well.
