  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

A level of Russian interference and operational activity on European soil this intense has never been recorded before. That, in a nutshell, is the assessment emerging from officials and analysts tracking Moscow’s active measures across the continent — a dossier that Formiche and Decode39 have followed for more than a decade.

It is also a dossier sitting on the desks of Italy’s prime minister’s office and relevant ministries, informed by intelligence work aimed at monitoring what is now openly described as “hybrid warfare”.

  • These activities have become more intense and overt since Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, particularly as Russia’s current difficulties intersect with uncertainty in the West over continued support for Kyiv — uncertainty amplified by propaganda campaigns designed to inject Kremlin narratives into European political debate and, through it, public opinion.
  • The issue is as much the nature of these incidents as their number. Drone incursions and airspace violations, intelligence operations and sabotage, pressure against critical infrastructure and economic interests, cyber attacks and disinformation all vary in attribution and severity.

...

They share a basic logic: applying pressure on Europe while remaining, whenever possible, below the threshold that would trigger a conventional military response. All this is happening as several EU countries, including Italy, approach a complicated electoral year.

...

Operational pressure has been accompanied by political intimidation. Nikolai Patrushev, a Putin adviser and former secretary of Russia’s Security Council, said that if Poland intervened militarily against Russia, the Polish state would cease to exist within “two or three days”. The threat was conditional, but came amid a sequence of incidents that has further sharpened tensions between Moscow and Warsaw.

...

The Italian picture adds a particularly sensitive dimension ... [Italian] officials at Palazzo Chigi [which is the seat of the Italian Government ] maintain a daily tally of hostile acts, retaliation and espionage linked to Russian actors. One detail is particularly telling: “Not all those that are stopped are made public.”

The intelligence dimension is also becoming more visible. An investigation by Il Riformista’s Massimiliano Coccia identifies several Russian diplomats in Rome as allegedly linked to the GRU, FSB and SVR.

Two military attachés named in the investigation, Ivan Petrovich Gorbachev and Mikhail Vasilyevich Astakhov, were expelled by Italy in July after AISI uncovered what the Foreign Ministry described as illegal activities on Italian territory.

...

Attempts have also been made to spy on senior figures at some of Italy’s main state-controlled companies, with Italian security services intervening in time. The episode illustrates how increasingly difficult it has become to separate military security from economic security and the protection of strategic assets.

The DKC case provides another example: At the end of August, Putin ordered the temporary transfer of control over the Russian operations of the Italian group’s subsidiary, which manufactures systems for electrical and industrial infrastructure, to a Russian company. This move is being perceived in Rome as another form of pressure that could directly impact Italian economic interests.

...

The Article 5 question. Against this background, the dossier becomes considerably more sensitive.

For several months, NATO circles have also been examining a much more serious scenario: a limited Russian action against vital Alliance interests or targets, potentially in one of its more vulnerable member states. Romania features among the scenarios under consideration, including through the Black Sea and Transnistrian axis.

...

This does not mean an attack is considered imminent. There are no indications of an impending Russian operation against a NATO member. The purpose of contingency planning is instead to prepare for the possibility that Moscow may eventually seek to push the threshold further.

At what point does the collective world just go you know what f this guy we are invading Russia?

I feel like a LOT of all the awful shit going on the last decade originates with Russia.

You can't just invade sovereign countries.

Also, the guy has a finger on the red button which can end us all.

Also also, the military industrial complex needs to make lots of money which is easier with lots of casualties.

Bro, wtf do you think Russia did with Ukraine?

You can absolutely invade sovereign countries. It’s generally not a good idea, but sometimes some countries aren’t deserving of their sovereignty.

Also f this finger on the red button shit, nobody is using nukes it’s in nobody’s interest to do it and nobody will.

The future is drone war not nukes, and countries need more experience with this type of war sooner rather than later. Invading Russia with drones sounds like a great testing ground to me.

Bro, wtf do you think Russia did with Ukraine?

Bro, wtf do you think your whataboutist argument is doing here?

It's not okay to invade sovereign countries, even though the USA did it, Russia did it and Germany did it. Russia needs to get rid of their autocratic leader, not be punished further.

sometimes some countries aren’t deserving of their sovereignty.

And what makes you qualified to decide who's deserving and who isn't?

The future is drone war not nukes, and countries need more experience with this type of war sooner rather than later.

Or, you know, train without starting another war?

Invading Russia with drones sounds like a great testing ground to me.

That is a disgusting viewpoint reducing Russian people with lives and ambitions to targets for practice and you should be ashamed for it.

Thank you for your voice of reason. Some people here on Lemmy are talking out of their arses and really need to stop.

I believe a lot of the messages of the last few days about "Russia dangerous, send more money to the military" are in bad faith. Not because Russia is all wonderful. But the so-called attacks are tiny. So there's drones everywhere, yes, but are they causing damage? Why would that warrant a full-on escalation with Russia?

Where have all our peace movements gone?

[–] helix@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, rarely complex geopolitical issues have simple solutions. Russia is already losing a war of attrition. No need to destroy the whole country when few attacks do trick.

I'm pretty sure if someone had thought of a genius sure-fire way to end the war in a few days they would've done it already.

Look what Putin's special military operation cost him. He really thought this would be over in a week or so, partially due to hybris, partially due to misinformation.

Who says the rest of the world isn't blinded by hubris and misinformation?

[–] chahn.chris@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Voice of reason? This whole thread just turned into a Russian bot troll. Thanks for the propaganda.

[–] helix@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago

I don't understand. Do you say I'm a Russian bot? I very much ain't, and I really dislike the Russian government, as well as all apologists for Russia. I think Russia should stop the war and rebuild their own country instead of destroying both Ukraine and Russia itself.

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

So they are hiding terror attack attempts and shielding Russian operative?

Why?

[–] biofaust@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Italy at the same time also saying: jet fuel costs.

Both are true though.
