So, instead of taking a high school equivalency course, he’s gonna spend a lot of time and money in court, stomping his feet. All because somebody convinced him that he’s “special“ and doesn’t have to do the same thing everyone else has to.

What a waste of time.

Edit: I explain this further below, but this guy has a clear path to becoming a firefighter (if that is his true goal), but he’d rather throw a tantrum about how he is entitled to special treatment because of his ignorant bullshit, “beliefs“. I hope the state of Nevada stands up to this garbage. Those qualifications exist for a very good reason, and to be a firefighter, you will either meet them or you will not. You cannot sue your way around them because someone told you that you were “special“.

That is fair. You can’t really blame the guy who was brainwashed from childhood for being brainwashed. (I don’t even wanna know what kind of religious gobbledygook this is all being couched as.)

But, at a certain point, there is a responsibility one must take upon oneself to step out of that. Especially when opportunities abound for such a simple enlightenment.

I definitely see him as a victim, just not the type of victim he is framing himself as.

And that’s rather the point, isn’t it?

I don't disagree with that. I just don't think there's a ton of space in the vent diagram of "people who got homeschooled" and "people with a strong sense of agency and personal accountability." A lot of these people are raised with fake victim complexes.

Some places may not accept an equivalency test. I don't believe that the military will, the fire department could be similar. If that's the case, then maybe it does need some time in the courts to decide.

When I was younger, I thought that's how homeschooling worked. I mean, I still think that, but I don't really know.

Then he could attend classes at a local community college and earn a proper high school diploma. At least there he could test out of most classes until they determined which ones he still needed to take to get enough credits to graduate.

Although I’m pretty certain that both the US military and any local fire dept would accept a GED in place of a high school diploma.

Edit: yes, any branch of the US military will accept a GED.

Edit 2: my local fire department will accept a GED at minimum, and I live in a medium sized city.

on one hand, i feel bad for him bc it probably wasnt his choice to be homeschooled. otoh, i mean. he was homeschooled so god only knows what kind of brainworms he got. i do feel like getting the EMT license ought to count for something though.

My department will pay you more for a master's degree. Maybe I can get my mom to write me a note and draw me a diploma.

This family is shocked, SHOCKED i tell you! that they aren't special enough to have rules not apply to them. Side note, this kid looks like FAS to the max. His community has been spared.

That’s an inherent risk of home schooling. If you start to homeschool your kids, inform yourself beforehand, don’t take anything for granted.

most of the times the parents dont follow public/national school curriculums, so its basically going to for-profit schools and getting a diploma.

i agree, but firefighter jobs seem competitive, and he would sitll be at a disadvantage.

Unaccredited homeschooling isn't an education... at best it's uncritical and ineffectual, at worst it's blatant brainwashing for "alternative facts", dubious history and religious dogma. If the kid didn't pass the same standards his peers did, then he isn't qualified, end of story.

I was homeschooled and I was required to take all the same standard tests that public school was required. My diploma is equal to that of one through a public school. But no idea if thats a requirement in Nebraska...
