I worry nobody realizes he doesn't mean they don't need "Canada", the physical land.
He means they don't need "Canada", the country/government/people currently claiming hold to that land.
They do need the people to do the labour to get the stuff from the land. That's traditionally been part of the neocolonial formula after WWII. 😄 So we'll stay, but work for a pittance with no welfare state or universal healthcare. We'll pay taxes but get no vote.

The US is the largest market then China. So how is Europe going to replace them?
Read an analysis about that: it'll take years. It's not just a case of load on boat -> profit, a lot of the infrastructure takes those minerals south to the US. You'd have to build new loading, rail, unloading and port infrastructure.
This may very well be worth the cost and even starting that process is a strong signal, but it's not as simple as flipping a switch.

Of course I seriously hope this changes but I think that only happens thru enough DSA-aligned people in power to force that change. An uphill battle, but there's hope.
The American public supports the military above all else. You mess with the military and their effective mission readiness, the people of USA will be United.
This means if you do anything to affect the US military then expect the public to turn on you
American here who has lived in Canada by choice for many years now and am now a dual citizen. I'm from a military family and my family doesn't even support Trump or Chief Makeup Queen that Trump appointed to head the military. Your assumption regarding public support might be applicable in Alabama or some shithole state but most Americans neither approve of Trump nor the actions that Trump has forced the military into taking. Supporting soldiers and vets is a lot different than supporting the stupid missions the government forces them to carry out.
The vast majority of Americans including many Republicans are sick of the US meddling in other countries' affairs. The US as the hegemon Monroe envisioned only exists in history books and MAGAt idiot minds.
