Sadly Jackie has betrayed the people of Hong Kong. In 2009 he stated "I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not.". He also said he was "beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled."

It was my understanding that they essentially kidnapped his son under trumped up weed charges, and ultimately forced him to change his tune publicly.

He is rich enough that he could leave and take his entire family with him. He stays because the money and status is more important to him. There's also the whole disowning his lesbian daughter thing.

I get what you’re saying, but China has a habit of disappearing billionaires that I don’t think even his level of money could afford him safety.

I'm sure he could take the secret police on with a ladder and 2 rolling chairs

China also notoriously has a state apparatus to harass and kidnap expatriates who are not on good terms with the state. If Jack Ma couldn't get out, Jackie probably didn't have a chance.

What makes you think they’d let him out?

He's a guy with money. It's a disease, pray you always have enough and not so much you start doing what the money wants

[–] skunk@lemmy.zip 17 points 5 days ago

This cost him his hollywood career iirc

This kind of feels like he’s been coerced. There’s a huge range of levers a government can use to control speech.

I did hear that the Chinese government actually negotiated with him when Hong Kong was returned. He certainly could have just uprooted himself to nearly anywhere else at the time.
