I am on one ui right now, I dont know if they collect any telemetry. Will it help to pick a minimal one from fdroid?

Also for battery life, would one ui perform better because better optimisiation or debloated foss launcher?

I've tested many fdroid launchers and the best one for me is kvaesito, good customization and stable; in the past I always used KISS since I liked that experience but it feels a little dated today, and kvaesito can replicate it pretty good.

Kvaesito is my favorite too

I've been using this one for a while too! I really quite like it. It keeps all the clutter off my wallpaper, but I'm still able to access everything just by swiping in a direction

It will have minimal impact on anything. Good you are starting with something.

Give octopi launcher a try. It's the best one I tried so far.

E/os reports 0 trackers.

Samsung OneUI collects telemetry which they use for ad targeting and sharing with third parties along with other uses. They've also had multiple leaks in their software adjacent to OneUi.

I like lawnchair a lot. Not having news/AI crap constantly loading is defenitaly a plus for battarty.

There's some knockoff/divided forks, here's the version I use.

Additionally, NetGaurd is great for locking down what has internet/cell access. It uses VPN, so if you already use that it won't work, for only 1 VPN can run at a time.

Similar to NetGuard there is Tracker Control. It also uses the VPN "slot" but it can additionally run a wireguard tunnel itself now. So you can combine access control, adblocking on DNS level and actual vpn.

Edit: added link

It sure could make a difference. Another option would be to get an app that lets you choose which apps are allowed internet access, such as NetGuard: https://github.com/M66B/NetGuard

Personally, I use mu launcher It's minimalistic and uses gestures instead of icons

I pretty happy with this: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.eblan.launcher/ It have all i need, also double click to lock screen. No need to use any hardware buttons. Also easy on battery and have enough of customisation.

Good thing the old name is still in the ID.

[–] mcSlibinas@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm not familiar with old name. What's the story behind?

[–] diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

"eblan" is supposed to be this guy's name. It is also close to "yeblan" in Slavic languages, meaning "moron". Also, many would transliterate the word lazily to "eblan", anyway.

When I saw that I sent a screenshot to all of my friends who would get it; some sent it to their friends and some used it as a reaction image for when someone is showing off a stupid setup...

So you judging software based on how sound creators name not in his language?

No? Hackers should be judged by their hacking and not bogus criteria like their name. I just find it comical. I did feel a little guilty about it when I went to the GitHub and realized it's the human named that too, though.

Just be aware that the double tap to lock feature requires elevated permissions, which may compromise security. Whether or not that matters to you depends on your threat level.

[–] mcSlibinas@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I use fdroid open source app to have more security. Apps from google play much more unsecure. It's not about elevated rights! One of google lie.
