The USSR is now Volgarena and the US is now the MAG Union.

Interesting comment from under this youtube video that gets into the censorship:

Golantoruという国名は日本語じゃないと分かりにくいかもしれない、GolanHeightsをToru(奪う)という造語だ MAGAllianceは言わなくても分かるよね 制裁する側のアメリカに居ると体感できないかもしれないが 他の国にとって今イスラエル周辺を話題にするのは大変危険だ アメリカ大統領がICC所長の日本人にした事を考えれば、SARUの選択肢は先見性があったと言える いつ米国の制裁を受けるか分からないのだから

machine translation renders it as:

The country name “Golantoru” might be hard to understand unless you know Japanese—it’s a made-up word combining “Golan Heights” with “Toru” (to seize). I’m sure you all know what MAGAlliance is without me having to say it. Living in the U.S., which is imposing sanctions, you might not feel it firsthand, but for other countries, discussing the situation around Israel right now is extremely dangerous. Considering what the U.S. president did to the Japanese head of the ICC, you could say SARU’s decision was far-sighted. After all, you never know when the U.S. might impose sanctions.

Wow, surprising that Masamune Shiro was able to predict that much into the future.

So what? The world does not revolve around Israel. We can make up fictional country names with real world analogs all the time. There's an entire TVTropes entry for it.

I wouldn’t call it censorship when you don't want to get sued or bombed on for making a prediction so well in advance about countries seeing us more expendable than androids. We are seeing GitS play exactly how capitalists intended, and you had three generations to prevent this dystopia from occuring.
Yet here we are, four apartheid genocides into the 21c, and not a damn change.
I agree with @cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com in the /₀🧵: so what? Are you just noticing artists have had to not mention WIPO signing nations direct names and creatively name them something else in their art? Get creative, luddite.

I now see what this about. Your LA Spanish localizer decided to change it back to Israel, and wants to get Luigi’ed. Good for them.

Kinda hate the name changes a lot just because they make it even harder to follow. I'm bad with names anyway and I can't for the life of me remember these fantasy names that don't even sound like countries.

Still really like it, but this really isn't helping with my one big complaint about this otherwise fantastic adaption.

Dont know the context in which Israel gets mentioned in the original or Ghorantl in the new anime. Could you maybe fill me in on that?

Besides that, my hopeful interpretation is that the creators dont believe Israel would (still) exist in tga universe

Thank you. So the manga is critical of Israel, which is a part of the original story they removed from the new anime. No place for critical art in capitalism, sadly.

To be fair they did hint who they are in the name Ghorantl or Golantoru: Israel (Golan Heights), toru means to take. Meaning take Golan Heights.

Not to do OP’s homework, but no. Both the anime & manga utterly believed Zion would still be apartheing Palestine. We are playing out a 40 year old prediction to a damned T.
And none of your parents or you did anything to deter it.

Like, do you know me or why do make such claims? Feels a little unnecessary.

[–] waltersf@bookwyr.me 0 points 2 days ago

It's rhetorical. Like telling someone watching an open flame “don't touch it, you’ll burn yourself!” and they still do it anyways.
I don't know you. I don't know if you are a ghost, hacker, android, politician, child trafficked slave, cop, [insert all examples in GitS], etc.. The machinations predictions in a work of fiction are becoming exceedly true. Are 🫵you going to do anything about it?

Well the setting is 2029 so...

Okay so they renamed a country. Why should I care?
