And per the article itself:
The share of coal averaged 49.7% of China's total electricity output in the first half of this year, official data showed.
Renewable energy accounted for 41.2% of China's total electricity generation in the first half of 2026, with wind and solar combined generating almost 25% of the total power output.
So not only does the US actually make more electricity from Solar than coal (in may, so maybe slightly more than the year average), China makes more than double the amount from coal as from solar and wind combined.
There's no reason why this would be true - coal is on the decline while renewables are increasing in the U.S.
Hedge funds are not into coal because coal is not profitable and that's basically all they care about
