Even if you pay, you are always the product. No company will refuse a second revenue stream

What do these companies not understand when we tell them we don’t want fucking ads!?

[–] ytsedude@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They know. They just don't care.

Alternative recommendations? Because the day I see my first ad this app is wiggling then dying

There’s !CoMaps@sopuli.xyz, but it lacks public transport in most places

[–] triptrapper@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

If public transport is important, CityMapper can't be beat IMO.

CoMaps, OrganicMaps, OsmAnd or simply https://osm.org/

Turns out Carrot Weather has an adequate navigation feature. I assume that this is how they managed to get around the CarPlay restrictions.

Can’t have a weather app on CarPlay, but a weather app that displays maps and provides turn-by-turn directions is fine. 🤷

It uses OSM data, but the maps appear to be a bit out-of-date. Turn-by-turn works fine in unmapped streets though…

I guess that’s where the resources are going now.

Does anyone here use Apple Maps? I started using it as part of diversification of services couple of years ago and it was mostly fine but I now wonder if anyone at Apple does.

Voice navigation in particular must have been switched to some LLM that was trained on data that didn’t contain enough of my language. Now Apple Maps calls a „rondo” (roundabout) a „rumdaboots”, usually surrounded by some rock eating noises. It also lost ability to pronounce most numbers over 10, especially if they’re written with diacritic signs but I guess they didn’t test if numbers work either. I was particularly confused when it pronounced „Robert Schumann street” as „Robert z humana street” (which translates to „Robert from humanities class”).

Same thing happened when they went from VoiceCommand to Siri back in the days of iPhone 4S.

Enshittification is a symptom of oversimplification.

I was sympathetic to Apple Maps because it uses OpenStreetMaps data and (AFAIK) contributes back. And its not Google Maps!

I wss just getting used to it. I'd even contribute photos of places.

Well... no longer, I guess.

Ooh, they be going the way of Microshittification too.

Here's what's new: Ads.

We need someone to build an adblocker for this ASAP.
