Please no, if there’s anyone on the planet I don’t want to face in a war it’s the Canadians

A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

We are nice…….until we aren’t.
Yeah, we may joke about Canada being America's hat, but you all practically invented war crimes before they were war crimes.
I don't want to fuck with that.
Yeah, we may joke about Canada being America's hat
The U.S. is and will always be Canada's gut.
Geneva Convention about to get another page added
They don't have nukes but we share a 3000 mile border with them, they speak the same language and can imitate us even more easily than Ukraine can with Russians, they also have guns although they don't need them to sabotage our infrastructure.
Meanwhile Trump and Lutnick treat fucking North Korea with more respect than our own allies. These motherfuckers should be tried for treason.
Team Canada, let's gooo 🇨🇦
I didn't see the "at war" part in the full text of the speech, and I don't rememer hearing it when I watched it. Perhaps it was in response to one of the questions after the speech?
Yes, it was in response to a question from the NatPo reporter.
I've done a pretty good job of eliminating most American products from my life, but a few have slipped back in or maybe were missed, this just strengthens my resolve and I will do another review of everything I do.
I've discovered lots of great Canadian products, hardbite chips, Tough duck clothing, all sorts of alchohol, Presidents choice products are surprisingly good all around. Coke is the only tricky one for us, but atleast it's canned in Canada and is more of an international brand now.
Fuck Coke, they discontinued Minute Maid frozen juice and laid off a bunch of people at their Canadian plant.
No offense... But you can't live without Coke? Other colas are that inferior?
not just coke we trusted america on all the brands. we thought we were good neighbours. many people traded in their blackberry for an iphone. canada has alot work to do.
I have also found coke challenging to fully eliminate. I have cut back, but it's just so convenient and I am maybe a little habituated to it.
I wish the EU would be inspired by Carney.
EU and Canada have been making deals to take the sting out of this trade war. They knew it was inevitable. Trump always comes back to demand more.
Well, the good news is that Canadians don't have to go back to drinking American pißwasser
Time to start hyper enforcing spending limits for Canadians travelling to and bringing back stuff from the US. Tax the hell out of them!
Unlike the previous tariffs, the new U.S. measures affect a more varied array of business sectors, although they disproportionately target building materials like plywood as well as tissue used for toilet paper, which are significant exports for the forestry industry.
Jokes on us, I guess, since you don't need TP if you're in diapers.
I think Canada, Iran and most of the rest of the world have figured out that Trump is six months away from being the lamest of ducks and two and a half years of being out of office entirely. Wait for the storm of insanity to pass and deal with the aftermath then.
The next President of the USA will definitely have to go on a serious suck butt tour to heal the damage this administration is causing...
You’re talking as if MAGA will just disappear the moment Trump gets ousted. It won’t.
MAGA makes up the majority of the Republican party. And their criticism of Trump is not about democratic decline, rampant corruption or ICE, but about inflation, Iran and the general consensus that Trump is not being true to his word.
Far right influences have been steadily gaining ground within the Republican party for over two decades. And by this point the leading ideology within the party is anti-democratic, anti-free speech, racist and imperialist. There are no moderate Republicans just waiting backstage to steer their party back to the way it was.
Instead we have a whole cadre of ideologically motivated crazies who are more than able to carry the project further after Trump is finally ousted.
What do mean by majority? 51% is a hell of a lot different than 80%. I think much of MAGA is more populist than ideological. Some will disappear, some will follow the next populist to come a long and that populist could have different ideas that they latch on to. Compare the "tea party" of Ron Paul to the co-opted Tea Party that came later...
This mentality that it will just be over after four years is driving me up the wall
Why? The forces behind MAGA and Trump have been part of most democracies their entire history. They percolate up every one in a while then disappear into the background noise until next time. McCarthyism looked like the end of the world as well just to disappear just as fast as it came about. Cults of personality rarely outlast the death or disgrace of the founder.
We've already seen that story. And Biden did make amends but didn't remove all of the shitty things Trump did. And ultimately the US went back to Trump.
Maybe there might be a reasonable person as President in 2029. But even if that's the case, we need to assume there will be another President like Trump (or worse) in 2033.
We have to consider the possibility that post-civil rights US was the outlier, not the norm. The US may be just reverting back to it's true self, a violent nation dominated by racism.
Sadly I think there will be record iPhone sales in Canada this year.
Probably an increase in netflix and Disney streaming revenue too unless there is a tax placed on the streamers.
Most Canadians aren't pretty oblivious and politically unaware and lack the grit and determination of their forefathers.
I'm afraid we have much of the apathy and same political problems of the US just to a slightly lesser degree.
I've cancelled Netflix, Amazon Prime, I would've cancelled Disney too, but I was never subscribed to that. If I want to watch US movies and TV shows it's no problem to just pirate them.
I can get most things shipped to me from nearby stores in about two days so there actually isn't much need for Amazon.
At the grocery store, I've noticed more Canadian made products on the shelves, and they're easy to spot because it's the ones that aren't permanently on sale. The US made products have to be sold at a discount to entice people to buy them. So that's an indicator that I'm not the only one boycotting the US.
I've tried to have my vacation within Canada, but unfortunately I couldn't. That's because all of the hotels in Canada are booked solid. So I don't think I'm the only one wanting to vacation within Canada.
Don't pretend that everyone else in Canada is apathetic just because you are. If you want to be apathetic about this, that's on you.
