Meanwhile On Grad

Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether it be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users, as it handwaves their extremism.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in arguments that lack mutual agreement.

Brigading/Trolling — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from maliciously voting, commenting, or manipulating the post in any way. This includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be banned. Good-faith and honest communication is an exception.

Tankies can explain their views, but may be criticised or challenged for them. Any minor infraction of the rules may result in a warning and possibly a temporary ban.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically last only 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction doubles the duration. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

MODERATORS

Y'all remember that meme about leftists caring about human rights issues and tankies countering that with nothing other than "that's CIA propaganda"? Well, someone reposted it in the hexbear slop comm. All I commented was "ITT: Insults, putdowns and whataboutisms". Well, now I'm banned from a whole range of Hexbear comms permanently. Reason:

Rule 1: All posts must include links to the subject matter, and no identifying information should be redacted.

Lol.

Title

Me: "Yeah, nobody is surprised. That's what they do, that's all they do, they're idiots."

They're basically the left wing version of groypers, I cannot stress this enough: Good, be glad they banned you, if they hadn't I'd say instance block them anyway.

Saved you the effort to block the site. Don't see the downside.

I really used to want to have communist friends before I got on this website. I've seen a group active in the city I live near and I've wanted to make contact and go try to be part of something but honestly interacting with these sealioning trolls kind of put me off it.

People IRL probably aren't like that but the risk kind of doesn't seem worth it. They might be the kind of people you get high with and then they gang up on you in a compromised state

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Dude it's the internet. The far right has been trolling every kind of left group for over a decade and since Trump 1.0 it's been state level actors.

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 7 points 1 week ago

Oh I know. I fucking expect it from them. I just kind of thought people championing social liberty would less shitty to be around.

Hell, I don't even need people to be nice. Just holy damn don't be toxic. Their culture is just being toxic and then blaming it on you.

[–] astropenguin5@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Not all communists are like that, or are MLs. Anyone IRL is much more likely to be chill, especially if they are doing real activism and stuff. And if not, just leave em.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

Tankies rarely leave their houses, so that communist group is probably fine?

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago

They seem to get more hostile as they get more radicalized, I guess that tracks.

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 6 points 1 week ago

One of the first instances I blocked

[–] kepix@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

just block the whole crap, and never look back. let the cavemen fight eachother.

[–] unknownuserunknownlocation@kbin.earth 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A part of me wants to do that. The other part of me says to not block it, because that just everyone live in their little bubble that much more, which is a major problem nowadays.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

By that logic you should go to klan rallies, and pride parades, peta protests and food drives. Just go to everything with zero nuance, restrictions and self respect. You either learn to get the fuck over what other people are doing. Grow up and start respecting yourself and the limited time we have by ignoring things that arn't worth your time. Or you waste away worthlessly doing nothing as you fuck yourself over by forcing yourself to bow and compromise as a way to compenstate for shit you have no control over.

So stop giving a fuck if other people live in a bubble. It doesn't matter, it doesn't effect you and you arn't a god king that can force them to change.

The only thing you can do is learn that you need to respect yourself and stand by what you believe in. If something causes problems for you and you arn't required to interact with it. Then why the fuck would you willingly choose to do so. You arn't a martyr you get nothing but self harm out of it. If you want to fight for change go fucking do it and be the change you want to see in the world, if you must suffer then make it actually worth it.

But basing your own decisions on a fake problem that you have no control over is dumb as fuck.

By that logic you should go to klan rallies, and pride parades, peta protests and food drives.

Going to those signals support. There's a difference between that and not filtering out what certain people say. If anything, it's more like those people who go to counter-protests or go to the far-right rallies to question the people in a way to expose the falsehoods behind their beliefs (albeit on a much, much smaller scale, seeing as this is just the Internet).

It doesn't matter, it doesn't effect you

Except it does, it affects all of us. A major part of the reason (IMO) everything is so polarized is because so many people are living in their bubble and as such don't understand why others think differently. And understanding how and why those people think the way they think is the first step in countering it. I have been somewhat successful in moving people away from radical ideologies IRL, but only because I understood those ideologies and their faults.

That seems like an insult to reddit.

I saw. I noticed when I looked at Slop's post about my post in the tankieslop comm.

They claim the comments under my post are unbearable but then their comment section is the usual apologia that you could cross out on a bingo card ("liberal", calling anyone who disagrees with them a nazi, ableism, etc.)

They also seem to call me a zionist, based on something I said a year ago ("anyone who opposes the statehood of Israel, make yourself known so I can block you"), which was more bait so I can just sort out the worst revanchists.

Like I am more an Isratin proponent now.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

("anyone who opposes the statehood of Israel, make yourself known so I can block you"),

To be fair, that's a pretty Zionist thing to say so I'm not sure why you'd be surprised when people take it that way

[–] TanteRegenbogen@feddit.org 0 points 1 week ago

I maybe went a bit far there. But basically, no matter how much one says one supports Palestinian self-determination and oppose Israeli crimes. As soon as you don't want people to fantasize about genociding Israeli civilians, you get called a zionazi by these people.
