I've been using and tweaking these automations since last summer and I think it's mature enough now to share. It tracks how much your AC has been cooling, heating, idle, or off during a configurable period, and will raise or lower your thermostat's temperature based on that. With the defaults, if your AC has been cooling for more than 1 hour and 40 minutes in the last two hours, the temperature gets raised. If it's been running less than an hour, the temperature gets lowered. It handles heating, as well, but I'm in South Louisiana in a house that needs the insulation replaced, so cooling is much more tested lol. The goal of this is to minimize how much your AC is running while staying at a comfortable temperature. There are settings for how high or low the temperature can be set, a time window that determines whether the automations can trigger, and deboucing periods to prevent the automations from triggering again before the temperature has settled. I've tried to make pretty much every knob that can be turned configurable by setting state. I've really liked the way this has worked out, so hopefully someone else will find it useful.
EDIT: I don't think I made it very clear that the temperature doesn't just raise unconditionally. I have mine set to a range of 70F to 74F. It raises gradually throughout the day. So it stays cool in the morning and comfortable in the afternoon and evening. This may not make any sense for newer, well insulated homes, but it makes a big difference in my old place.
