Hoekstra was appointed with the goal of antagonizing Canada. The US admin will view this petition as a win; that Hoekstra has succeeded in riling up Canadians and dividing our nations.

Even if this petition reaches 10M signatures, I expect our government to ignore it, saying "while we appreciate that Canadians are upset with some of the things this ambassador has said and done, now would not be a good time to expel the representative of the US administration as we work on trying to secure a trade deal that works for all Canadians blah blah blah."

Having said all that. I signed it. I want that bum out of the country. I do hope this petition sends a signal to the average Canadian that we are not backing down even if our government tries to remain diplomatic.

The Canadian government needs to focus on trade with Europe and Asia before the USA.

100%.

The US' goal is to disrupt our economy. A deal with the US during this administration isn't worth the paper it is written on.

If a deal is reached tomorrow I expect it to be torn up by the US in 6 months to a year (maybe even sooner) with the goal of causing further chaos to our economy.

Americans have no right to our companies and resources.

The Iranians have the right goal of refusing to negotiate until Trump leaves office, deals signed with him have almost never been worth the paper they were written on.

Yes, this administration has shown how dishonest, dishonorable, and disgusting Americans are.

[–] moldy_rice@piefed.keyboardvagabond.com 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

South America is sad by this sentiment

[–] Sunshine@piefed.ca 1 points 6 days ago

Hey I want Canada to trade with Mercosur

[–] Canajan@piefed.ca 2 points 6 days ago

We are, but through the years so many businesses got complacent and relied on only the U.S. market.

Not a business owner, but I feel if you can’t operate a business without relying only on the U.S. you have a failed business.

Please people, stop saying things like this. US is a short drive from Canada. Consult a globe: Europe and Asia are oceans away. All that shipping costs money that we have to subsidize over local trade partners with those countries.

[–] imrighthere@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You should take a short drive over there and never come back.

Excuse my math.

This asshole Pete Hoekstra was the ambassador to the netherlands in the first term of this president, after leaving his post as US rep for West Michigan's Holland area, an area that votes nearly 70% republican.

He made a comment about no go zones for whites, that the immigrants were burning cars, burning politicians, while ambassadoring in Denmark. They called him on it, and he first lied, calling it fake news, they showed the video of him saying that, and he just froze up while being questioned by reporters, that were all like you have to answer that's not how we do it here...

It's fucking hilarious, this guy is a stupid prick.

Wow what a fuckin clown..good for the Dutch on calling his dumbass out for lying.

[–] Sunshine@piefed.ca 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Please stop sharing Politico links

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 1 points 5 days ago

I know, axel springer are a bunch of nazi bootlickers.

Nevertheless, they do some reporting. The Intercept just shared one of their links in one of their articles I would add.

Is there a way to share the information through a service that denies politico the traffic on their site? I know people do that with the twatter.

[–] ReluctantZen@feddit.nl 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ah the same guy that lied the Netherlands had "No go zones"

[–] TheJesusaurus@piefed.ca 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I think he's correct actually, its just that the "no go zones" he found were due to the dutch' famous hatred for fascist pricks on their land.

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

The Netherlands has a reputation for being tolerant

It's absolute bullshit

Smoking weed in Amsterdam does not a tolerant society make

Lots of people are sorely disappointed when they encounter the Dutch in the wild

Send him back in several different diplomatic pouches

[–] moldy_rice@piefed.keyboardvagabond.com -1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

The alternative to diplomacy is war. Is that really what you want?

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Ask greenland how that diplomacy is working out.

[–] moldy_rice@piefed.keyboardvagabond.com 1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Ask Venezuela and Palestine and Ukraine how that war is working out

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 2 points 6 days ago

Ok that was a bit snarkier then I perhaps intended.

Afaik they had those wars forced on them.

And that's the thing. Ideally speaking nobody wants war. That's a given. But the reality is, when you're dealing with fascists you don't have many options.

If you draw a line in the sand, even a minor one, you'll have a war or conditions leading up to one. Some lines must be drawn because if you don't they'll draw those lines on their conditions.

If you try being diplomatic and try to coexist it's only a matter of time until you do get forced into a war.

If you stand up: war.

In Europe we recently had a US diplomat making a stink over matters he had no say over. To the point where he clearly was only interested in causing an outrage. And that's what these assholes want, puppets to dance for them so people are distracted from the Epstein class and to have people do their bidding.

Removing these is indeed a risky move, but you can't play nice either.

[–] DarkDecay@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Not NATO members. Should be interesting to watch the world pull away from America completely should we keep our current attitudes. This won't end well for the usa

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 4 points 6 days ago

I'm confused - which part of the USA's actions rn are considered "diplomacy"?
