Nope. Not this Canadian. I'm done buying US goods or services.

Spineless banker

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Canadians still aren't going to buy it, you dumbasses.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 6 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Well you and I won't, but I know there are those that will πŸ₯²

74% of Canadians in a poll said they were not likely (69%)or somewhat not likely(5%) to buy American alcohol after lifting of American alcohol ban. The Americans might sell some booze, but nowhere near the levels pre tariffs. How long that holds out could be years.

[–] OldCrow@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago

74% were not likely? 69% somewhat not likely? 5% to buy American??? Not high enough!! I still refuse to buy American produce in grocery stores. This is NOT high enough. So, it’s all good now??

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 23 points 12 hours ago

American here, don't give in to the asshole.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 31 points 12 hours ago

Based on what I've been seeing lately, we're doing just fine. They should keep them off the shelves.

[–] breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca 17 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

Has there been any comment from provincial governments on this? The alcohol bans aren't federal and the Canadian government really has no say. Keeping the bans in place also appears overwhelmingly popular across the country. Sixty-nine (*high five*) percent are in favour of the bans and the same majority say they won't buy US booze even if the bans are lifted.

[–] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 3 points 9 hours ago

Quebec said they're not going to lift the bans so far.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 7 points 11 hours ago

I mean, they can put it on the shelf, but you can't force people to buy it.

[–] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Albertan here. Despite our government putting US booze back on the shelves a year ago, and despite being the most US-loving, redneck province in the country, US alcohol sales are down about 70% across rhe board.

Now if only you didn't vote in fascist traitors.

[–] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 hours ago

Agreed. Believe me, I've been fighting as hard as I can against the UCP.

And now Kenney is trying to pretend he supports Canadian unity, after a few years away from his dumpster fire.

We can boycott places that carry American booze

But why indeed.

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 2 points 11 hours ago (4 children)

Unfortunately the death of CUSMA would destroy many Canadian small businesses, my own included. Nobody would buy my product if it suddenly shot up 20%-50% in price, even though there's no American alternative.

I'd rather we keep the fight up, but if we can get some leverage and buy time for US politics to shift, it'll probably be worth it.

[–] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

It's not about US politics shifting. We're buying time to decouple our economies. If you are waiting for a return to normalcy with the US, you are going to be sorely mistaken.

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

US politics isn’t going to shift. This is just the beginning. You should base your business decisions on that.

[–] Shadow@lemmy.ca 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The political polls seem to disagree with you.

Thankfully it's just a passion side project for me, I'm willing to take the loss and close it down if I need to. Many Canadians aren't so lucky.

[–] kibblebits@quokk.au 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Found the person who thinks polls in the US are real.

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago

Who thinks there's going to be a non kangaroo election.

[–] GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca 3 points 8 hours ago

US politics is never shifting back. If I had a business that relied on American suppliers, I would find suppliers in the EU or Asia or find a new line of work.

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 1 points 8 hours ago

Well I pay more to get stuff from Canadian suppliers without using Amazon.

But I'm lucky to have the option to make that choice.

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 7 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

The gov may lift the ban, and put the bottles back on the shelves; but we're still not buying it.

Elbows up motherfuckers.

/edit: I should also note; each province enacted their own ban. It's not up to the federal government whether we lift the bans, each province would have to agree separately.

[–] Warehouse@piefed.ca 2 points 7 hours ago

The Canadian government saying that the ban is lifted is meaningless because they never banned alcohol anyway, as it's not their jurisdiction.

[–] kbal@fedia.io 7 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

I guess when you've preemptively announced that you're not going to retaliate against the illegal tariffs in any way that would get their attention, such as putting export duties on petroleum products, you end up with little choice other than to give them whatever they want.

[–] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago

Carney sucks

[–] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Sort of. It sends a message worldwide that you can count on us. Reliable, predictable. A real partner.

[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 5 points 11 hours ago

Bending and spreading is not how you deal with bullies... just saying.

[–] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 4 points 11 hours ago

While this won't make a huge practical difference (can't force people to buy the stuff), capitulating to Trump only lets him take another step forward. He will never concede ground or come to an agreement. He's a bully, and giving him what he wants will never be enough.
