Its companies like this, purchasing the subsidized Deck, with no revenue circling back to Valve, that contributed to them needing to charge full price for their Machine & Frame, raise prices on the Deck.

Disney got them at a discounted price?

Steamdecks are consols.. So Yeah they are already sold at a loss because it is assumed people buy games in the Shop then

Steamdecks are consols [sic]

triggered

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 hour ago

Consoles are usually just weird, cheap, locked down, underpowered pcs, that only play certain brands/formats of games, and have unique cases, lol.

It basically means 'thing that is (usually) for your living room what plays video games and such'.

Valve has said multiple times they don't sell their hardware at a loss. Razor thin margins, but not a loss.

Original steamdeck was sold at loss atleast that is what ive read back then. Not sure about oled and today after ram-agedon

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 5 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Where are you reading that?

https://www.nme.com/news/gaming-news/gabe-newell-says-steam-decks-aggressive-pricing-painful-but-critical-2995253 as example.. Again not sure about today... But If you find a source that says otherwise just link it.

Nothing in Gaben's quotes says loss. The author is making assumptions based on the "aggressive" and "painful" comments.

They also outright said the Steam Machine isn't sold at a loss.

Ah so Rbnsft is spreading misinfo.

I'm not able to find anything that corroborates Canuck's claim that prompted my question.

At this point I'm assuming they were also talking out their ass.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

I wouldn't say they're spreading misinformation. The article they linked DOES try to make the claim that Valve said they were selling it at a loss. However, they provided little evidence to back it up.

One can unintentionally spread misinfo, but sure, I hear you.

'Dubious claims' is maybe a less harsh phrasing.
