Official “Haters of AI” Club

389 users here now

Welcome to the Official Haters of AI Club! Here, you can rant and rave about how much you hate Artificial Intelligence (AI) as much as you like. Because let’s be honest: we all need an opportunity to do so. Even the most ardent users of AI will inevitably get fed up of it. So welcome, and enjoy.

Rules:

The only rule I ask is that you obey Lemmy’s fundamental rules (I.e. no racism, no porn, etc.)

AI generated content (e.g. photos, videos, text, etc.) is allowed, but only for critiques. If the Ai generated content is explicit or inappropriate, do not post it!!! Instead, you may describe it in modest detail.

Requests:

I am completely easy: I would ask that you keep posts here relevant to the topic at hand (I.e. deriding AI) but I’m not strict about it.

Memes are strongly encouraged!!! (Who doesn’t love a meme against AI?)

Help us grow:

As a developing community, we rely on your support to help further development. Having obtained 40 subscribers within the first day of operation (36 within the first 5-10 minutes of establishing the community) there is massive potential here. You can support us by posting in the community, sharing/recirculating posts, and encouraging others to subscribe. All efforts are gladly appreciated.

With thanks, Mr Tobi, community founder.

Hey, thats going on too. I've read papers from even back in 2020 that was trying to do things like that (I read specifically breast cancer). They just dont get as much marketing or media exposure until we see a breakthrough.

Yes I’m aware. It just seems to me that they are putting more money into the peripheral things like image generators and such, rather than the practical things like developments of cures, vaccinations, tackling climate change, ending hunger, etc.

I try not to talk about my opinion on these matters much because I know nobody gives a fuck but I actually think the underlying technology is pretty interesting and cool.

My issue is that evil men are doing evil things with it.

If GPT models were just a quirky little toy you could play with on the internet and not the latest and greatest and destroying the planet's ecology and also the economy I'd think they were kind of neat.

My friend, you can voice your opinion on AI all you want here 😊

The people behind AI undoubtedly are the issue. However, i believe that they have pumped it with so much greed and bile that it will take a lot to redeem it.

Because they are trying to find a route to commercialize the technology and make it profitable so that it isnt wholly reliant on outside funding.

If that’s true it’s absolutely disgusting. If AI were designed to be a practical problem solving tool, I wouldn’t take issue with it. But to me, it’s as if they’ve taken 70-odd years (maybe more arguably) and thrown all this money at it just to let someone be able to erase a bird from a sky in a picture on something rather than striving to do things like cure cancer. Appalling, don’t you find? And I certainly don’t think this kind of question is asked sufficiently.

I dont know, the alternative is them just continuing to rely on funding from the government(AKA all of us funding them). If they can find a way to monetize AI while they work towards their stated goal of AGI then im not necessarily opposed to it. There is a lot of things I dislike about the way these major tech companies are going about AI but them trying to figure out a way to monetize it is pretty low on my list. Im FAR more concerned with what they are doing in regards to their governmental partnerships like forcing datacenters in everywhere they can and helping to facilitate the genocide in Gaza with their AI kill chains.

Why would they need to rely on funding from the government when all the companies are run by fucking billionaires? These are the most profitable companies in human history, they don't need taxpayer dollars. And I don't care what they might cure, if they need to setup virtual child porn rings to fund these projects, they're not worth it.
